Title: Fokker E.III Eindecker [4.10]
Post by: Lisek on September 09, 2012, 03:46:06 AM
Fokker E.III, one of the first fighters of WW1

The Fokker E.III was the main variant of the Eindecker (monoplane) fighter aircraft of World War I. It entered service on the Western Front in December 1915 and was also supplied to Austria-Hungary and Turkey.

The E.III was basically an E.II fitted with larger, newly designed wings that had a slightly narrower chord of 1.80 meter (70-7/8 in), compared to 1.88 meter (74 in) on the earlier Eindeckers, going back to Fokker's original M.5 monoplane aircraft. The E.III retained the same 75 kW (100 hp) Oberursel U.I engine, and therefore also used the larger diameter "horseshoe" pattern cowling that also mandated the inclusion of the E.II's soffit-like extensions to the sides of the upper nose sheet metalwork, but had a larger 81 l (21.5 gal) drum-shaped main fuel tank just behind the cockpit, which increased the Eindecker's endurance to about 2½ hours; an hour more than the E.II. Most E.IIIs were armed with a single 7.92 mm (.312 in) Spandau LMG 08 machine gun with 500 rounds of ammunition; however, after the failure of the twin-gun Fokker E.IV as a viable successor, some E.IIIs were fitted with twin guns.

Fokker production figures state that 249 E.IIIs were manufactured; however, a number of the 49 E.IIs were upgraded to E.III standard when they were returned to Fokker's Schwerin factory for repairs.

Please read before asking:
1# Engine has no throttle, you can change power by switching magnetos, magneto 1 means ~33% of power, magneto 2 ~66% and magneto 1+2 is full throttle. Also it is possible to regulate power by changing mixture level.
2# due to its extremaly small weigt and speed, plane won't always explode after hitting ground, just some parts may fall away, making futher flight impossible.
3# you are flying in mountain terrain on your own risk, AI won't be able to fly over steep peaks and will crash.
4# if engine won't start at first time, try again. Feature modelled by SAS~Anto to improve realism.

Enjoy :)

Top notch effort. I saw in your original thread this project was started way back in 2010. The time has paid off. My DBW has broken down for some reason, so I can't try this plane out, but I hope to get it fixed soon and give her a go.

The cockpit looks especially good. I like the way the gun is situated with the gunsight. I don't think I have ever seen that type in a flight sim before, even back in the old RB3D days. That will be very interesting to use.

I'm also glad to see that the boys at SAS have put in a lot of thought and work on the engine aspect of the early planes with no throttle control. VERY good indeed.

All in all, I think for a bunch of "Hackers and pirates"(Not my words. They came from another SAS member.), SAS has worked very hard at making the sim better and not just throwing planes out every other week with little or no research or care for historical accuracy in FMs.

Seeing what goes on behind the scenes around here, I can tell most users that SAS is working very hard to get all things right on the aircraft they work on, so before screeming for more or complaining about this or that, take a moment to remember all the work that went into the project and see if you can contribute with more than just, "This thing doesn't work, what a piece of crap!!!!" I know this sounds rather negative, but you can still be critical without being obnoxious. Critique the work with an eye to improving, not just complaining.

To Lisek and your crew, well done.

Great news! Just remembered times when I choosed option "fight with famous ace" in Red Baron 3D and gave (with diabolic laugh) the Eindecker to von Richtohofen while choosing Camel for myself.)

Some reports/requests:

- Position of the dead pilot is placed too far backward from the cockpit
- Is it possible to simulate (roughly at least) wing-warping? For example, is there possibility to create an angled axis and rotate part of the wing around it?
- Do you have any plans to update a FM? I thought the plane with wing-warping should have poorer roll characteristics (of course, I can be wrong).

Many thanks anyway.

I am very happy to see this cool classic fighter fly again in the IL-2 skies.
It may have taken a long time to make, but it was worth the wait. She is looking beautiful.

Big Applause to Lisek (Modder-Mecanik+designer+engineer+creator!)
and also to VPmedia, SAS~Anto and Loku !! for your much needed contributions and dedication to making this
aircraft fly nice. Great job guys, THANK YOU!
It´s a Top-Gun airplane for everyone to enjoy!

This is THE FIRST Top-gun Ace airplane in the world! and a very rare airplane too.
Fokker production figures state that only 249 E.IIIs were manufactured during World War 1.

The only known surviving original Eindecker, bearing IdFlieg serial number 210/16, was brought down in the Somme area in
1916 by the British and then evaluated by the War Office until it was transferred to the London Science Museum in 1918.
It is currently on display fully assembled, but with its fabric covering removed to illustrate its internal construction

No.1: Sorry, that is my bad, I missed it, fix in first post.

No.2: Wing-warping wasn't planned from the early begginig, in IL it wouldn't look too realistic.

No.3: In reality you shouldn't really be able to do a roll in this plane, but thanks to Oleg and IL-2 physics it is possible. Few rough turns is everything that this plane should be capable of doing  ;D

I could tune the roll behaviour a little bit but wing warping really isn't a possibility.

Possible bug? The plane, when shot down, "floats" over the ground. Also, when killed, the pilot has 11/2 heads (WW1 pilots by Max)

Lisek&SAS~Anto, I'm unfamiliar with modding issues and details but I'll ask:
Have you tried to limit plane's roll "agility" by limiting possible roll angles the similar way, as "forced triming" ("valezhka") phenomenon was modelled in JetWar?

PS Thanks for hotfix.

Hi :)

Link directs you to Mission4Today, when you have an account there, you can see a download button. Download, and after unzipping you should have two files: one .jpg image and one bigger file called: WW1_Fokker_E3_Template_PhotoshopCS5_MAXtheHitman.psd You should have a graphics program (f.e. Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro) to be able to open it. And that's the template.

Narvik: Valkhenza is a phenomenon caused by airframe asymmetries in early production Mig-15s which were due to poor manufacturing practices. At transonic speed it resulted in  the aircraft entering a dangerous aerodynamic mode, which was difficult to escape from due to increasing stick forces and decreased elevator responsiveness due to air flow separation. It is a vastly different situation to that of the Fokker E3 which had poor roll sensitivity due to its primitive wing warping.

We fixed the roll rate last night by decreasing the control sensitivity significantly.

after some flight, and even a pair of dogfights with a french captured eindecker, i officially declare the E.III the Father of all CrapPlanes. and i like it! :D

it remains (imho) too much easy to fly compared to RoF one, but is not much a problem as it's sooo much less frustrating hehehe

Great work! thank you! :D

Yes, alotef is right :)

In fact you haven't posted any details so I can only guess that you added one folder more than it is needed, should be like DBW/Fokker_EIII/3do (and other files with funny names)/...

Skins and lines in weapons.ru and plane.ru are not needed really, they make all stuff just look more professional  8)

I used in the patch, example:

It's a bit unusual, but I am having trouble getting this wonderful looking plane to work in DBW 1916.

If I use the original download on the first page, I get a 20% ctd and when it try it out with the latest 1916 patch and Fokker E-III patch, I get a ctd at 70% ...

I've tried lots of permutations but no matter how I combine versions and patches, I always get a ctd with the Fokker E-III.

I've compared air.ini versions as well and that does not make a difference either.

Anyone with a hint of what to do?

If you're not certain about it, then make a copy of your working #DBW and then work in that. If it doesn't work anyway, then just delete the modded folder and go back to your original ...

Yes, but when starting game there is shown loading progress in percentage on the bottom of screen. And on how many % loaded it exits?

I've had a 20% ctd when the Eindekker is installed on it's own in DBW1916
And I've also had a 70% ctd when the Eindekker patch and the latest DBW1916 patch is installed ...

And each time, in both versions, when I disable the Eindekker in air.ini, DBW1916 loads normally and all other planes work as they should, including the new Aviatek.

In other words, it always come back to the Eindekker ... disable it and all works.

For those getting 20% crash, then you might need to install the latest AI mod onto DBW1916. It is required to get the rotary engine to work.

I'll double check right now and let you all know :)

I can confirm that the Fokker E.III works in DBW-1916 without any problems.
Didnt try to install it into DBW.
I think everybody with errors should post his install path for a file in his install, example:

IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#DBW_1916\AIRCRAFT_Fokker_EIII\3do\Plane\FokkerE3(Multi1)\summer\skin1o.tgb

if you got two folders between #DBW_1916 and 3do then you need to remove 1 level
Title: Re: Fokker E III Eindecker

Thanks,

C:\Sturmovik DBW 1.7\IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\#DBW_1916\AIRCRAFT_Fokker_EIII\3do\Plane\FokkerE3(Multi1)

The path is correct for my install, I've been installing for so long that if I asked about a ctd and it was because of my incorrect folder depth I'd have to commit seppuku out of pure shame ... ha ha

Anyway, a 20% ctd does not indicate an incorrect install or folder depth, at least if I am not mistaken it doesn't. Doesn't a 20% ctd indicate some kind of java problem?

we excluded that possibility (double foldering happened wth me few times to be honest :D )

20% is java (recently had one because of 2 missing classfiles)

I had the 20% crash too. Installed AI engine hotkeys and the game loaded but hung at 100% loading. Installed Jet War Mod and it works fine.

enable other air.ini in dbw-1916 and then you can fly against ww2 planes

I finally got the plane to work. What I did was update from the very basic, first original #BDW1916 folder (the one that appears on first installation of DBW - best to save that somewhere) ... previously I had been updating previous updates of #DBW1916 (updating v1b2 with v1b5 or something like that) ... that must have messed up a whole bunch of files ...

So if you update the original (very small) #DBW1916 folder with the very latest update (vp_dbw1916_update_v1b5.rar)and then afterwards apply the three new patches

http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/zip/dbw1916_patch9.zip
http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/zip/dbw1916_FokkerEIII_Aviatik_patch2.zip
http://www.vpmedia.eu/il2/zip/AIRCRAFT_Friedrichshafen_GIII.zip

all should work OK ...

Well, the install instructions say that you should delete or deactivate your existing #dbw_1916 folder
then obliviously do the update with the files numbered 1,2,3,4 by extracting them in that order into your game folder. I didnt tested other possibilities so maybe not deleting the original folder could lead to some troubles but not very likely.

So you don't really need the original DBW1916 folder to start out with? If you use update v1b5 on its own it will work just as well? That's good to know ... thanks for the clarification.

I love this little plane. I have one issue with it, though.
After prolonged flight of about 15-20 minutes, my engine RPM just drops and doesn't stop until I hit the ground. I can get up to 500m with Mixture back to about 1/2, but the engine RPM still drops, regardless of whether I bump the mixture up to 100% or right down to around 30-40%. Any ideas? Its killing me because I've made some good missions and I've no idea why the engine is dying out.

See what key U assigned to magnetos. See first post/engine for ~% . Be sure to be on magnetos 1+2 (this is default).
Perhaps U are reducing magnetos to 2 and then 1 without noticing...

if U press "plus" magnetos, normally nothing happens cause U are already at maximum 1+2.
if U press "minus" magnetos U see "magneto 2" on screen; but with this done, U are now down to 66% engine power and doomed.
... so U need to go back up to 1+2 with a press of "plus" magnetos key again.
Good luck with that!

As far as I can tell it is something DBW 1916 related. Supposedly this should work on modact, but because I' m incompetent and never check my facts, I'mm assuming there is some prequisite missing. Such as DBW.

what is the secret of flying this plane properly?

I can't get it to climb properly, only very very slowly and at 600m it is a struggle for each meter, no fighting possible basically. I am reading about fights in altitudes as high as 2000m and higher, an altitude I am not able to make at all.

Speed is barely exceeding 110 km/h TAS in horizontal. It is supposedly able to go around 140, a number I am never able to achieve.

Please read before asking:
1# Engine has no throttle, you can change power by switching magnetos, magneto 1 means ~33% of power, magneto 2 ~66% and magneto 1+2 is full throttle. Also it is possible to regulate power by changing mixture level.
...

Probably that is the answer you are looking for?  :)

It is definately not a plane for vertical fights. Rate of climb (from British tests of captured airplane, UPAVON report no. 48) are as shown:
1000 ft - 1 min
2000 ft - 2 min 45 sec
3000 ft - 4 min 25 sec
4000 ft - 6 min 20 sec
5000 ft - 8 min 30 sec
6000 ft - 11 min 10 sec
7000 ft (~2100 meters) - 14 min
They made it up with the tested airframe to 12 200 ft, but it took them aproximately 51 minutes to reach that altitude.

So please have it in mind  ;)

I know how to operate the engine, but thanks. the lacking speed is part of the issue, almost every other plane is faster.

are these numbers even possible with this craft? I can't get that high, no matter what I do or how long I try.

I managed to acheive 1500 meters with it before getting too much bored,as it's going really slowly even with 8x time. But it is possible.
And level speed test I managed something around 135 km/h.

I am really not a java or FM guy here, so I don't know how to help you  :(

Don´t feel too bad about it guys, this is how the airplane really was in real life too. Very slow.
Just this past week I was reading a book about the Fokker E.I and E.II and how can I make our
E.III model into an earlier version. Perhaps I can re-paint the skin-template (and skins) of a
Fokker E.III to look like an E.I or E.II version, without changing anything in the original model.

After reading the book all I can say is that the E.I and E.II were only diferent from the size of
the wings. The earlier versions had shorter wings that were just a few inches shorter but all
model versions used the same airplane frame. The main diference in all these aircraft were the
engines and their power. The motor engines looked the same, but the power
was very diferent from the E.I to E.II and E.III.
This is the book I was reading...
http://www.ulozto.net/x3Vpqv51/windsock-datafile-091-fokker-e-i-ii-pdf
The great WW1 German ace Immelmann wrote to Anthony Fokker a letter on how he was very
excited on shooting down his first enemy airplane while flying his Eindecker equipped with the revolutionary machine-gun shooting through the propeller, it was the first enemy airplane shot down
in this manner. He also wrote asking Anthony Fokker to please make this airplane faster.
He wanted a bigger and faster motor in it because at times he found it
very dificult to approach the enemy from behind to shoot at it. He was getting upset that his
Eindecker took so long to fly up into the sky to engage the enemy airplanes, that many times he
just saw the British airplanes fly away and not get a chance to fight them.
This is a true fact and a true letter that exists.
Even though this airplane made famous the so-called "Fokker-Scourge" over the battlefields of
WW1 and many allied pilots were afraid to engage such a machine in combat, it was really not
a super-plane.
We have to remember that this was just the beggining of the Great War and
many aircraft were still in the very early developement stages in airplane design. Motor engines were
still in its infancy too.
Just 15 years earlier from this time, the Wright Brothers flew the FIRST airplane in the world! ...and
that thing was not very fast :P
So this Eindecker was the latest in airplane innovation at the beggining of World War One.

Only a few years later would the skies become really ferocious with fast flying
aircraft and heavy machine guns, but at this time when the Fokker Eindecker flew, there were still
pilots shooting at each other with shot-guns and hand-pistols... some even threw bricks at each other!
I am not joking, its true. We still need a mod for that... Brick throwing pilots! :D AAAAHAHAHA!

I love the E III ( and all the a/c we've got with full engine management) one of the joys of DBW 1916 is listening to the engine and then adjusting the settings to make the old girl fly as best as possible....
I fly the E III as the original boom'n'zoomer.....first stalk your target at maximum distance....approach on their blind side......rise slowly (very slowly) 500m + above them....shallow dive ( too steep and the wings will come off and engine will over rev and seize up)...... aim for the pilot ( I've found that the Farman and the Be2c will take an awful lot of hits before burning and you've just got the one m/g !)
Generally, you've got one chance to strike as I've found the Farman & Be2c will outrun the E III comfortably  >:(

Hello and Merry Christmas.

I've been doing a bit f tinkering with the Fokker FM to bring it up to become a bit more playable with the other WW1 planes of it's days.

I can reach 140km/h in level flight now at 500m and the takeoff is much easier and shorter. I also notice that the AI does much better with it.

vampire_pilot, I have downloaded your EIII FM patch and I think it makes a wonderful difference. My question is: can I apply it to DOF in CUP and if so ,how?
Title: Re: Fokker E.III Eindecker [4.10]
Post by: Fresco23 on January 21, 2016, 06:32:34 AM
Airbourne, you should be able to use it just fine in DOF.

Try this: Create a folder called "!Fokker_E.III_FM", put the vampire's new FM in there, and drop the folder in your DOF folder. Then run the game. Should do nicely.

P.S.: you can name your folder whatever you like, it's simply a container. I just find it easier in the long run to know what I have when I go back. But probably keep the ! In front, as this will push it to the top of your mods list, in case there is something conflicting that you need to load ahead of.

Good luck!

This FM runs nicely in DBW-1916 btw for me.

Fresco, how do you find she flies in DBW 1916 ?
I think that she climbs better and maintains a steady 130kph on the level....I find the new FM effects quite subtle.
Changing fuel mixture had little or no effect on performance.
Overall I found that the Pfalz E I is slightly quicker, cilmbs faster and can maintain 140kph on the level.

Cheers

I agree alfie, I felt a slight increase in climb performance and marginally better top speed than before. She is still no super fighter which is good I think.

I only flew it once though, as I myself prefer the lovely Pfalz-E.I. But this should make the AI Fokker more capable of maintaining position in a fight, and in a chase. These are the areas that I noticed it fell behind quickly before.

All in all I like this new FM.

Hi there!

New to the forum and looking to add some standalone WW1 planes to my softly modded 4.13.4 Modact game

the thing is I can't get to add this lovely plane, in the installation says:

INSTALLATION:
Put Fokker_EIII folder into your MODS
REQUIRES DIFF FM

Is DIFF FM not included in the package? in this case where can I download and how to install the right version?

I Just get the game crashing when loading at 60% every time I add the plane in Air.ini just like I do when other planes and guesing if I am missing to install something the plane needs to work first.

Thank you very much!
