Albatros D.I: Minor 3D corrections
Outcome from my first exercises to learn Gmax ;)
Minor corrections to external 3d model:
Exhaust pipe modified so it doesn't interfear with the centre struts.
Modified shadow, so it matches the 3d model.
Wires and struts adjusted, so they don't go through the wings.
Tested in DBW_1916 and DOF3.

Very cool fixes!
Thank you very much vonOben 8) I like them.
Sometimes it is the litle details which make up for the big impression on an aircrafts good looks.
You did great with the 3d-fixing.
I have a small request for you, if possible. It would make the aircraft look more complete and looking
more like the real aircraft.
One small detail which has been overlooked on this aircraft model since the beggining and
could use a little change, is the side radiator.
The original side-radiator on this aircraft was of a box-like shape and smooth on its side
and what we have now is also a box-like shape.... BUT with a very strange side "effect" blister portuding from its side.
When viewed from the front it looks like a small blister or pimple coming out on its side.
I found this to be very strange and could not find any of this design in any of my researches in
books or on the internet when I was creating a skin-template for this Albatros version.
So I left the design lines I made for the radiator in the skin-template , in the hopes that one day some one could
make it smooth and for it to look more realistic.
Didn´t anyone ever notice this strange radiator design before, or is it just me?
Thank you once again for making these fixes VonOben,
it is one upgrade which I will surely use in my aircraft models.
This German beer is for you!

-
I can have a look at the side-radiator, that would perhaps be a good new Gmax exercise for me. ;)
-
New side-radiator without any skin at this point:

That looks great!
A realistic Albatros and its cool side beer refrigerator, errrrr.... I mean , side radiator. ;D
I will buy it !
Looking good VonOben ! Cheers!
-
I had som problem exporting the radiator from Gmax, but with an advice from Dreamk I eventually succeeded! :)

It´s looking great VonOben! 8) Mighty cool looking radiator. Very realistic.
Congratulations on a fine job. This was a part of this aircraft model that needed some attention.
Looks wonderful.
-
Hi max
Thanks for the kind words :)
However I'm not sure it is correct shape I've used. :-[
I made it like in the picture:
(https://s20.postimg.cc/ld2lqb9v1/Albatrod_DI-cut-away.jpg)
but in the drawings in Windsock Datafile 100 - Albatros D.I-D.II it looks like this.
(https://s20.postimg.cc/b1q8xsncd/Radiator_drawing.png)
I've also seen photos with that shape in that book.
Do you know if there were different versions?
Best regards

to put your mind at ease,
I personally believe that you did a fine job at making the radiator look like the real thing.
What it needs now is a slight change in the SKIN details of it to wrap into the 3d-model better. The old skins may not fit
properly the new 3d-model design.
I am not an aviation expert, but I have been around these series of aircraft for along time since its creation a few years back. I have lots
of books on it and lots of photos for references. I needed them to study its design and construction so I could make the skin-templates for
the model. Let´s just say that I dreamed about the albatros aircraft in my sleep :D LOL
Even thought our 3d-model is not 100% correct, it does come very close to looking like the real aircraft. (Which I love very much)
It is just some details which need some little changes. You have done good with this new radiator design.
Now, (the player) you can zoom in to look at the airplane better and it has that iconic box-like design on its side, instead of the old version.
I usually never trust too much on drawings I see (technical, blueprint or artistic art) simply because there is always something wrong with them.
If I get 5 diferent sets of blueprints off from books or the internet, they will all be a little diferent. This drives me crazy because it just sets
back my time schedule when I do a skin-template. I have to do extra research on things.
The only drawings I would accept as 100% correct would be original factory blueprints, and those are extremelly rare to discover.
The only things I will accept is photo evidence. Zooming into vintage photos and looking at how the things were made , or painted on the aircraft.
I will leave you with some photos so you can check out the details and agree that YOU did a nice job on this new design.
I will include some model images which are much clearer so you can see the details and also another flight-sim model so you can
notice their design for their 3d-model.
VonOben, you did great, I congratulate you!
You probably know this guy, he is the young "Red Baron" with his first Albatros... LOOK at the side-radiators in the images.

What you see in this last image I posted looking at the radiator from behind, is what is on the drawing you posted
in your last post (Drawing top view). This detail on the radiator inside, would probably need extra polygons to create in the 3d-model and
make it impossible to put on the flying model. I am not sure, but probably too many extra polys.
I like the simple design you made already.
So you did great, don´t feel sad.
-
Hi max
I'm making a new improved version as it was on the drawing and the picture you posted.
I hope to release it quite soon.
Thanks for your interest!

Preview of the new radiator:
There are some display issues though :-[, that I need help fixing before release.
I'll post a question about it over at the Tech Help : Making Mods section.

That looks impressive 8) Extremelly realistic !
Congratulations Von Oben!
-
I was not able to solve the display problem, so I started from scratch making a completely new radiator mesh in Gmax and this time it displays fine:

The details look very impressive. Congratulations, once again!
It goes along very nice with the rest of the details on this aircraft.
-
Thanks max, I'm glad you like my new radiator! :)
I've uploaded the new version to my site now, and first post updated with this information.

Many thanks vonOben,looks very good!!!
-
Thanks urmel! :)
I noticed that the radiator placement wasn't 100% accurate :-[, so I've moved the radiator to a more accurate placement.
A new version has been uploaded to my site now, and the first post has been updated with this information.

Albatros D.I: Update 4:
Some more updates to the Albatros D.I 3d model:
-The shape of the pilot cut out in the upper wing is more historically accurate now and has more natural rounded edges.
-Light issues on the upper wings has been corrected.
-Upper and lower wings and ailerons have been re-mapped to the default skin file, so they can be re-painted in the usual way. The default skin has been updated with appropriate wing textures. This means old skins are not compatible any longer! But I'll release som skin updates later on.
-The wires now look round instead of the old squarish cross section.
-Damaged wing with ribs showing, moved to the correct place.

SUPER COOL NEW UPDATES for this classic fighter. Looks even better now.
THANK YOU VonOben!
-
Hi max
Thanks :).
Because of this update:
-Upper and lower wings and ailerons have been re-mapped to the default skin file, so they can be re-painted in the usual way. The default skin has been updated with appropriate wing textures. This means old skins are not compatible any longer!
Your beautiful Albatros DI skins need to be updated, is it possible for you to do that?
Best regards

All new skins ?
It will be possible, but it will take a little time. I have done alot of Albatros skins, some
of which I have not posted.
But this is ONLY for the Albatros D.I version, correct? ... or do you mean the entire Albatros family?
If the other versions will have new fixes and need new skins, it can be done. I still have all my PDF-books, information
for each aircraft skin and the original skin-templates. It can be done but will take a few weeks.
I personally do not mind to upgrade and update all my skins to match and fit these models to look much better
with the correct details in their place, but I do not know if the other skin-artists will be up to it,
to upgrade and re-paint their skins. There are hundreds of skins out there already posted.
This is no problem either, because on many occasions I have done the same skins as the other skinners
but have not posted my personal versions, just so there will not be too many of the same skins being posted around.
I can re-paint my versions once again and post them for everyone.
No problem.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
By the way, I forgot to mention,
that I am already re-doing my Late version Albatros aircraft skins so they can fit better into your upgraded
and NEW Radiators. The ones that are placed on the top wing, lower part. Your new 3-D version is much nicer looking
than my painted version on the skins. This is a nice upgrade for this aircraft.
But will there be any more changes on the Albatros D.V model which you might do in the future?
-
Hi max!
The changed mapping is on the Albatros DI and DIIEarly, and there is also a new DIIILate with centrally mounted wing radiator in the works.
To update the skins with the same wing textures as the default skin is easy to do, a simple cut and past job and I could do that myself.
But the wings were not always painted the same, so to get it accurate they should also be repainted and that needs skinning skill! ;)
Please let me know if you want the UV map as a bmp for the changed mapping.
Next planned 3D updates are a new DIIIEarly version and the Oeffag D.III, both with centrally mounted wing radiator, no mapping changes on those though.
No more updates on the Albatros D.V planned for now.
Looking forward to some new skins from max the skinning master! :)
vonOben
-
Sounds great VonOben.
If you do have a new UV-mapping for the new changes, this would be very helpful to me.
Although, I have not noticed any radical changes on the new skins from your new fixes.
Perhaps I missed seeing something (?)
Send it to me by PM when you can.
At the present moment I am only using 3 Albatros versions in my personal game (4.10 DBW) , The D.I, D.III and the D.Va,
because the rest look very much the same and were built in very small numbers. The skins for the D.I should
fit nicely into the D.II, the other versions are little diferent and need their unique skins.
The Oeffag´s are diferent machines and those need their own skin-template (skins), which I already have.
In good time, little by little, all will be fixed and looking good again.
Thank you for your fixes and contribution to making our dreams come true!
-
Hi max
Actually the DII was built in larger numbers than the DI and more commonly used:
(https://i.postimg.cc/02pZSvDf/Albatros-DI-DII.png)
The old DI and DII wings were mapped to the RolandCII.tga file, and not to the normal skin file. I've prepared some files to show the skinning differense and also a mapping file, check your PM please.
Best regards
vonOben
-
I am prepared to create all new skin-templates just for these new model versions. ;)
I will post the skin-templates for everyone here in SAS1946 also.
No problem VonOben.
If they make my WW1 adventure flights look better, you know I will use these cool models in my game.
As for the skins, they will all be re-painted once again. The game always needs skins for new models.
This will take time to do, but everything is possible.
-
Many thanks max! :)
I'm looking forward to the new skins from you! :)
-
Hi
I've noticed a minor display issue on right lower wing tip. :(
(https://i.postimg.cc/tCsNWx0b/Albatros-DI-Issue.jpg)
It is now fixed:
(https://i.postimg.cc/GmZ7Hj96/Albatros-DI-Issue-fixed.jpg)
The update can be downloaded at the IL-2 page on my site.
http://vonoben.free.fr/
Sorry for the inconvenience!
Best regards
vonOben
-
Many thanks vonOben for all your fixes, corrections and little touches. Much appreciated.
-
Thank you for the new upgrade and wing-fix VonOben.
I have tried using the radiator files (fixes) from the D.I version on the D.I seaplane version, but nothing happened.
Perhaps in the future this version get the same type of side radiator?
I would like to inform everyone...
On the new Albatros D.I and D.II skins I am working on, I am also using Murdoc´s template layers (so as to speed up
my working process), so he too will get his name credit on these new skins (with his new nick "Stiv_069"). I consider him one of
our finest aircraft skin-Artist for the IL2-1946. So his name will not be just on the old D.I version skins which used the Roland-CII
wings. -- This new upgrade from VonOben has ALL the aircraft parts on just one skin. ;)
The skin-artist Phas3e will continue to also have his name associated to these skins , because I had decided to use some of his
cool textures that make this aircraft look its best. He too is a very fine skin-artist who has contributed to the IL2-1946 for many
many years and has created alot of great skins for WW1 aircraft.
-
Hi guys
I'm glad you like the updates! :)
I'll add the Albatros W IV to my "to do" list. ;)
Best regards
vonOben
