gio963tto:  Built 3d model and assembled cockpit folders using parts of the 3d model.

Pete Shaw aka Mission_bug:  New aircraft slot from the old. Updated the cockpit java with new names for some parts and reorientated various cockpit controls so they moved correctly.  FM renamed from previous but with some entry changes for the 184.

Default skin:  stiv_069.

Elements of the mod: 1C Maddox Games from within IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.

Updated 2nd May 2019.

Changes:

For all versions you will now have the cockpit folders use whatever skin is applied to the aircraft.

A second pilot cockpit has been added that shows the gunner if you look behind, previously there was only the observer.

Besides the visual changes I have allocated a FM to each aircraft, however, these are all identical and there purely to save anyone who might be interested in making individual FM changes needing to open the java.

The torpedo remains as it was, if at some time Dreamk or anyone else adds the type of torpedo used by the 184 to a weapon pack I will further update the models, if not then be aware the existing torpedo is still too heavy and uses the game Mk.12 with the Gio 3d loading first providing the models are used high in the game folder.

Any faults previously mentioned remain, sorry.

Notes:

The Mod uses Cooper bombs and they have always been problematic, for some reason they are named differently in some packs, please make sure you have these in your game:

0_WW1Bombs_British and Arms_British, found at these links:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,33456.0.html

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,26355.msg335779.html#msg335779

The model uses the game MK.12 torpedo java and that is what will show in game unless you move the mod to the top of your DBW folder using the title '!         Short184 4.10', this is how the folder will be posted for those using DBW 1.71, DBW 1916 uses the existing folder structure of that game.  Used this way you will see the 3d torpedo model Gio made for the aircraft.  If you place the folder alphabetically, 'Short184 4.10' the in game Mk.12 model will show.  Testing in my own DBW 1916 showed the Gio torpedo showed wherever you placed the folder, please test in your own game to confirm.

Be aware that if you use this at the upper end of the SAS/DBW folder other mods using the Mk.12 could show the torpedo model by Gio.

All weapon options use WWI bomb packs from Dreamk.

Note:  Due to the way some of the gear parts are used in the weapon selection screen they are not part of the aircraft hier so do not show in the centre of the floats on the statics.

If you wish to use the Self Stationary Plane add the folder in the download that begins with the title 'PS_Short_Type184_SSP' to your mod folder and add the entries below.

Note:  If you do not have a section for the self staionary aircraft you will need to create one using the headers shown below after your stock static entries.

Follow the path:  STD/com/maddox/il2/objects/ Stationary.ini and Technics.ini.

Hi Pete
Having loads of fun putting our new baby through her paces...... :P
A couple of questions for you........
Q1. Any idea of the proscribed speed & altitude to drop these 1914/15 torpedoes ?

(https://i.postimg.cc/Yqm4jwxW/09-12-2018-10-25-18.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)
(https://i.postimg.cc/WpyF240V/09-12-2018-10-24-46.jpg) (https://postimages.org/)

Low & slow but too far away from target....torp putters to a stop  :(

Low & slow closer to target  ;D

Not enough power to climb away.........Aaaaargh, we did that rigging come from ?  o_O

Low & slow....... perfect......but too close to explosion.......goodbye rudder  :))

Any ideas?..........perhaps our resident armorer Dreamk might know ?

I whooped with joy when I spotted the lifting eye on the top wing of some of the variants  :-*
Q.2 (Not a request) Do you think our game (4.12 /BAT DOF) could ever be modded to use a winch ?
I'm thinking of something like the catapult the Jet boys use on modern carriers.....but in reverse....... and a lot slower  :D

Once again many thanks to you & Gio for your tireless work providing us with superb Vintage and WW I aircraft

Cheers

Alfie

Hello Alfie, as explained in the readme the torpedo uses the in game Mk.12 so as such is a little more powerful and heavier than what I believe was a Mk-4 tested on these originally, torpedoes it seems were a little problematical due to the low power of the engines so most of the time the 184 seems to have used bombs.

Every time I tried to drop one it just missed the intended target, never was much good at torpedo work. :P

Not sure why but I could not make a class specific for the torpedo, it would not show in the arming screen whatever I did, maybe because most folks like Dreamk seem to enclose their weapons in cod files, whatever they are, I do not have access, not worthy I guess. :(

Maybe these stop anything else I try to make useless or it could be the other weapon packs made by such as western are put together in such a way that they also stop anything else but the stock weapons loading besides the new stuff they use.

Maybe I was just doing it wrong, who knows. :D

You would need one of the coders here to make something specific for this bird, I have done all I am capable of doing, things such as the FM need the attention of a expert, my efforts are purely placeholders to at least allow the aircraft to function in game even if not exactly as would the real thing. ;)

Maybe if the aircraft makes it into BAT some of the problems might get sorted, if not you will have to enjoy things as they are until someone comes along to put things right, the java is included for anyone wanting to make changes.

Take care.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Hello All

I've come across a problem first highlighted to me by my good friend <Gunny>
He noticed when making a long mission (89 mins) for the Short .....that it doesn't seem able to maintain height over distance

I made a test run....

Gallipoli Map

Made a mission that started at 500mtr, had about 12 way points each one slightly lower than the last, rounded the headland and flew down the Dardanelles straight at 100mtr to attack a stationary freighter at 10mtr with torp.
Total mission time 36 minutes

= Short never made it to the headland  :))

Reset all way points to 500mtr bar the last three at 30 / 20 /10mtr

= Gentle descent from 500mtrs.....majority of flight at less than 20mtrs

= Short made a successful landing about 1km from target with engine idling  :))

Also noticed that when flying the Short seems to blip engine /slows down/fires engine again= lower altitude

I seem to remember this type of thing happening to either the AEG or the Aviatick (?)
One didn't have enough power to take off and the other would gently descend from altitude.....
I seem to remember dreamk fixed it by altering the size/ power of the propeller....but I could be wrong

Anyone have any have any ideas that would keep the old girl in the air for longer than 10 mins......... :(

Cheers

Alfie

Farmans have a similar problem. Keep it going at full speed. Say 160 kph. It won't go that fast, but should maintain height. Don't let it go below 1000m.

Ah...apologies David, I failed to point out that we're having problems with the AI + Autopilot function with the Short
Both of us can fly the Short to a target and successfully attack with torpedoes  ;D
Problems occur when you've set up more than 1 Short in FMB or when you hit the Autopilot switch
I thought at first it might be the enormous weight of the torpedo was too much for the frail under powered Short, but the problem still persists with a small bomb load and also when there's no ordnance.......

Very odd

Cheers

Alfie

PS It suddenly struck me it may be an all up weight problem........small fuel load might help ?
     Might be a 4.12 thing.......I'll make a 4.10  scenario

     More testing methinks.........Marvelous  :))

.................well that was interesting

First the bad news......whatever I try I can't get the Short to fly/ drop ordinance whilst either AI or Automatic pilot in DOF / 4.12  :(
Reducing fuel levels to 10% made no difference as did various bomb combinations

However....the good news, the Short is a very effective torpedo bomber in DBW 1916 / 4.10   ;D

She maintained correct altitude at a speed of 160 - 70 kph throughout the 36 min mission, dropped to 20mtr on the torpedo run and delivered on target, also managing successfully to escape the blast radius  8)

As I pointed out during the WIP phase of these I tried to make a torpedo class but failed miserably, no idea why as I have made various weapon classes before.

The nearest thing I could find was I think a Mk.7  that could be considered near to the sort of weight the aircraft could carry and that was from Dreamk but when loaded it was some huge bulbous bomb thing, clearly of no use and most likely being picked up from some other weapon pack.

I settled for the Mk.12 in game I think which is actually far too heavy for the puny engine, this was a real issue for the actual in service plane, so either that or no torpedo at all.

Not sure why there is a issue for the AI or auto dropping bombs although I must confess most of my trials were about getting the aircraft into the sky piloted by me or the auto.

Only hope guys is if one of the coders here can make something I could not or I can remove the torpedo load out, the real aircraft used bombs more often than not because of the weight problems I believe so we would not be far out.

There has always been this odd behaviour where FM performance was quite a lot different between 4.10 and 4.12, again as you know most of what I ship to you is just enough to get the thing moving, I live in hope one day someone will make work what I could not.

Aircraft was only ever tested and intended for 4.12 with ModAct 5.30 and DBW 1.71.

Take care.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

I am trying to run the Short in BAT 3.5 and have the problem that on airstart AI always has engine OFF. No turning prop, no engine, no engine sound. They glide down to the ground.

player A/C (and all AI aircraft in its flight too) has engine on when airstarting.

Is this known?

Hmmm...curious

In QMB BAT Musketeer I can fly all six models at once 1000mtr alt Gallipoli map
Engines on, props spinning, engine sounds etc
Principal a/c (pilot) on Autopilot descends at approx 1mtr a second
Remaining 5 models descend a lot quicker and make good landings on water.....

As I noted above in 4.12 the Short doesn't seem to want to maintain altitude, I noticed the strange blipping/ descent action when running long FMB missions at double/ quadruple speed

Many thanks for looking into this Vamps  :)

Cheers

Just been doing a few tests myself and I will certainly have to take a look at what is going on, really is porked. o_O

I did a air start in QMB and while the engine was on I experienced a CTD, this has happened before with other aircraft and seemed to have something to do with engaging other aircraft, usually it would happen to fighters, this is a bomber and as far as I remember no Sturmovik duties applied in the class that could make it want to fight something.

The engine is a major problem, a pair with torpedo will not get around the Gallipoli map from a scramble, bombed up will just make it but loosing height, both tests with the gunner.

Maybe more power to the engine would help but that usually brings claims of giving the aircraft advantages it should not have but it has been found necessary to get seaplanes airborne before although we do not want instances where it might keep pace with a F-14, that would raise eyebrows. :D

The torpedo could be swapped for the lightest available in game irrespective of nationality, anyone able to tell me what that might be please?

Anyway, I will have to investigate.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

to be perfectly clear: AI only flights are showing the engine off behaviour!

The player flight itself does not, no matter if player or AI wingmen.

Test for the Short 184. Many more little things did not finish. but you need to take a break.

Тест для Шорт-184. Еще много мелочей не доделал. но надо сделать перерыв.

Looks superb Mstislav, will download and give it a try, thank you very much, really appreciated. 8)

If I understand your issue in the first image, try here for the mapping of that part (Highlighted in Red):

I attached the parts and unwrapped them, however, Gio would know for sure. ;)

If the problem is the position, it is correct the floats were strengthened by the 2 tubes between them which were smaller in diameter than the supports inserted in the floats.

(Se il problema è la posizione , essa è corretta i galleggianti erano irrobustiti dai 2 tubi tra di essi che erano di diametro inferiore dei supporti inseriti nei galleggianti.)

Hello Mstislav, that part is changed in the arming options so that other racks can replace it, there is a folder in the mod called 'arms' in there change the 'skin1o' inside the folder 'Short184_RackDefault' to your new skin and then the colour should change. ;)

The colour should then always use the colour on the new texture that replaces that particular 'skin1o' already in the folder.

Hello guys, I know I said I would leave things be in game and stick to building models, however, something I did not do when I put this pack of superb aircraft by Gio together I found the time and inclination to finally do. ;)

If a skin is applied with the existing pack it will not be shown on the cockpits so I had a go at changing that so that things look better.

Still testing, this is 4.12, the java for this might be slightly different for 4.10, the off-set wings are from the cockpits and are like that so I know the process is working:

No idea when I will upload this, depends on testing and such, the other issues will remain as I do not know how to deal with them. :( :-[

Take care.

Hello guys, the 184 is now working as intended in my 4.10, DBW 1916 and 4.12 games, any skin selected will also now show on the cockpits. ;)

A second pilot cockpit has also been added for the turret versions that shows the gunner sat behind the pilot, currently you will see the observer in all types:

(https://i.postimg.cc/B6RTSQ1w/2019-04-30-21-56-49.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/r0C0gTjS)

While I am making these changes I am also inclined to make each type point to a FM file of their own, although I will not be able to make each specific to type myself it should make that process easier for those with the ability to produce good FM files, any thoughts on that guys please.

I could alternatively just add two FM files, one for the observer type aircraft and the other for the turret equipped ones.

Take care.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

Looks cool Thanks Pete.
Sorry I have not touched the skins on this cool airplane (yet) because I am still doing some others.
But I will return to this aircraft soon and do some interior cockpit skins for it.

Excellent progress Pete.....

I love this old lady  :-* Just recently I've been trying dogfighting without forward firing mgs....Short v Aviatic etc
Fascinating... relatively easy if you can slip behind and below your opponent..however if he goes down to 30m you're faced with a battle royal.....
Very much in the style of the old Galleons  o_O

Hello guys, I will try and put together links for three versions today with the changes mentioned. ;)

DBW 1.71. (4.10 version uses Dreamk weapons as previously)

DBW 1916.  (A 4.10 version uses the Cooper bombs available in that install as previously)

4.12 with ModAct 5.30. (As 4.10 with ability for AI to use water airfields as previously)

Looks cool Thanks Pete.

Any faults previously mentioned remain, sorry.

Take care.
