The Albatros D.III was a biplane fighter aircraft used by the Imperial German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) and the Austro-Hungarian Air Service (Luftfahrtruppen) during World War I. The D.III was flown by many top German aces, including Manfred von Richthofen, Ernst Udet, Erich Löwenhardt, Kurt Wolff, and Karl Emil Schäfer. It was the preeminent fighter during the period of German aerial dominance known as "Bloody April" 1917. The plane was manufactured in Albatros Werke and Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke factories. In total 1346 copies of Albatros D.III were built.Albatros D. III was used for destroying enemy balloons and airplanes. It was also commonly on duty when escorting bombers and scout planes. Pilots mentioned excellent view from the cockpit, good controllability, high speed and climb rate. After new Mercedes D. IIIa engine was mounted, flight characteristics were improved, that allowed this plane to be on duty till Autumn 1918. The fighter took part in battles in the West and the Palestinian front. After WW1 used in a big numbers in the Polish-Soviet War of 1919-20.

INSTALLATION:
1) Please ensure that you have a working copy of DBW/DBW1916 or have the SAS AI Engines Hotkeys Mod (https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,23327.0.html) working with SAS ModAct for 4.101m
2) After downloading extract the archive and put folder Albatros to your MODS, #SAS or #DBW folder within your Il-2 modded install.
3) Put folder 0_WW1Markings to your MODS, #SAS or #DBW folder. If needed, overwrite files. This solves 20% CTD if someone had one earlier
4) Later from folder Skins take folder AlbatrosDIII and put it into your Paintschemes/Skins directory.
5) Add listed lines to your air.ini, plane.ru and weapons.ru
6) REQUIRES DiffFM to run

Lines to add:

Finally, the most desired WWI biplane. This is like the Me-109 of WWI. Thanks a lot.

Sadly most game companies and modders focus on western front which they recreate 1000x times so this is welcoming change for the austro hungrian campaign.

All I can say is wow.
But its funny that Ive been so keen for this aircraft and the night before it comes out, I ruin my IL2 install and I need to re-download the DBW package, but of course the links are temporarily down so this torturous waiting must go on! :P

I can remember seeing this plane long ago when Magpie posted it in flight, it was and is the best flying model for IL2.
From the scalloped wings to the truly round wheels , it is at the top of it's class in model making.
This is the benchmark of excellence and I thank all involved SALUTE!

Well done guys, this 3D model is awesome!
I think the FM and sound might need a little tweak. At the moment, it seems like this plane flies like a franken... It turns on a dime and the wings don't seem to fail in an extended dive like they were reported to do IRL.
I made a video showcasing this superb fighter. Well done all involved!

I think you misunderstand my words. That was not meant as a blight on this beautiful aircraft at all.
The FM to me seems unrealistic, much the same as a frankenplane aircraft's FM in that it can pretty much out-turn any of its contemporaries without risk of stalling or stressing the airframe to breaking point.

You can definitely rip the wings off it, I made sure of it. Sure the G limits code be slightly decreased BUT the G code in Il-2 is not perfect. With it any lower, you can easily snap the fuselage in half from trivial manoeuvres.  It also exhibits the correct climb rate and top speed at altitude. Also it is supposed to turn on a dime, that's how it flew ;) Biplanes, even in that era, were VERY manoeuvrable.

If you can provide some sufficient data to prove this aircraft flew otherwise, I'm welcome to here it.

My thanks to Lisek and Co. The care, and talent, and hard work put in by all is evident in the wonderful addition to the game. This game community is beyond fortunate to have so many generous and gifted people, working seemingly around the clock, making this game better in every way. I'm sure Oleg never dreamed that something like this would occur, and down deep in his heart he's got to feel a little bit like a proud papa.

I still think that all of this is related to magic, and I continue to marvel at the imaginative things created by our  own magicians.

We are so lucky.

First of all, it does not give to us any information. What crash is it? When loading game, in Quick Mission Builder or what? Also, despite many attempts in the past I wasn't able to acheive 0% immediate crash, so check your loading screen again.

As far as I see, noone else has problems with this plane, so once again check if you did everything with the Installation suggestions step by step.

It crash's as soon as I press 'start IL-2' then the screen goes black, then goes back to desktop with the sas modact starter program, so therefore i do not know what sort of crash it is as i have no chance to see.

KAXii   have you tried flying in it in "DBW-1916"   .... instead of "Modact" ??
Perhaps this is only for just DBW-1916. I have not tried another other versions.

It does work for SAS modact hence this 'quote' from the first post:

1) Please ensure that you have a working copy of DBW/DBW1916 or have the SAS AI Engines Hotkeys Mod working with SAS ModAct for 4.101m

Yes, you're right it should work in Modact, as is working in my installation for example. ???  Now I really don't know what's wrong. Could you please go to your game main directory and in file conf.ini add or change lines in [Console] section?

Quote
[Console]
...
LOG=1
LOGTIME=1
LOGFILE=log.lst
LOGKEEP=1

Later start game, after crash find file called log.lst and post here text that appered in mentioned file.

Code: [Select]
The best thing if you could make it in that manner  :)
Thanks :)

This plane was my first model kit, 30 years ago (god I feel old now..)
I'm so happy flying it in game now, and she looks absolutely stunning, both outside and inside.
Many many many thanks!!   :)

NB: It's flying smoothly in 4.11.1

For those getting an error, the WW1 markings mod wasn't included with this bird. For now install the Camel or Fokker EIII to rectify this.

Regardless, there will be an update to the Albatros which will include it (as I've redone some of the markings). It will also feature some new cockpit animations ;)

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,13457.0.html

Already done that, deleted file named, Log and restarted game first time crashed at 20%, next time crashed on start up and log file reappeared but was empty...  :(

Okay, Anto found a solution for this, please give me some time to check it and then upload new version with some extra improvements  :)

Update in first post

Fixes 20% CTD bug, adds some more eyecandy animations in cockpit

For those who installed the plane earlier, just overwrite files and add folder with markings to your MODS.

Interesting screenshot Ice~Eagle. The WWI Albatross, and it's WWII equivalent.

Could do one of an Albatross with the BF-109E4 as that would be the more equivalent, as the BF-109G would be fitting the Albatross Va as they were both the most produced of their respective wars, while the Albatross III came earlier and made in less numbers than the V just like the BF-109E4

Hi kaxii. You know more about the 109 variants than I do. I guess that if anyone produces a Fokker D VII, it could be posed in a screenshot with a Fw 190.

Albatros became Focke Wulf so I guess its actually the 190 that is the real grandchild

However in reality a Pfalz D XII would have been the FW 190 of its time...It was built to out dive SE 5as and SPAD XIIIs  also it could deliver a far more devastating concentration of fire power due the position of its two spandaus.

Ok here is my log:

[very LONG boring log]

So what? Are we supposed to be interested by it? Are we required to read it ? Is there a problem?  ::)

What's your problem S.H? This fellow needs aid and no doubt he shall recieve it. In fact, Lisek asked for the logfile, so instead of posting abuse, read the thread properly and don't be a jerk.  ::)

@ kaxii:

Only thing I've found that may be related to Albatros in this log was:

Quote
WARNING: object '3DO/Effects/GunShells/GunsmokeI.tga' of class 'TTexture2D' not loaded
INTERNAL ERROR: Texture required

I do really wonder what's wrong for your install. Anyone more experienced can tell something about it (Anto  :P)?

I have no idea, this is the first time a ww1 aircraft has ever worked for me, and i have redownloaded this aircraft 3 times, to first fix the first problem(which was fixed in a patch) and now to try and fix this.

Hi Ice~Eagle. Tonight, instead of getting drunk in the kasino, the pilot is going to clean that plane. He'll need some soap flakes, a soft cloth, and warm water. When that's done, he'll go through the MG belts checking for bulged and deformed rounds. Then, he'll have a clean plane with maybe another 5mph of speed, and less likelihood of his MGs jamming.

cheers

after reading this whole post, i think i have the same problem as kaxii! my Albatros WONT run in QMB: loads to 100% then "null"

in Multiplayer Server, the Albatros spawns fine, (Gorgeous Work by-the-way!), engine starts, she flies beautifully, but no gunfire and no gun sounds! so sad!

But... UNLIKE kaxii, my Sopwith Camel IS working! Guns and all!

whats up? anyone  figured this one out yet???? kinda not fun to fight Camels with Camels :(

Might I suggest re-installing the latest DBW 1916 update which includes the Albatros optimized for DBW 1916?

First an apology.
I'm sorry for trying to get this to work in HSFX6  --- but I had to try.

It actually installs and flies fine, as long as the weapon is set to "empty"
When I choose default I get this error

Code: [Select]
INTERNAL ERROR: Effect param file '3DO/Effects/GunShells/WWIGunShells.eff' NOT loaded

I've searched around for the file WWIGunShells.eff but cant find it.
Is this an easy fix or am I advised to give up.

Thanks Ashes  8) That is very good.

This is like what happened to the real airplanes in WW1. First, they just make the airplane and put it into combat, as
time goes by they start fixing all the little details , here and there, that would make this one of the best fighter-airplanes
in the Great War.
IL-2 airplanes are like this also. All mechanics and friends working together to produce a better machine  8)
More Power to the IL-2 !

I wonder of they actually had reciprocating bolt handles? Im sure the guys at RoF did their homework, it just seems strange to me. Must remember though that was 1917 not 2012!

Respectfully Boeing I think that stuff like that begins to push the law of diminishing returns. A lot of time and effort would be put into that, but would it be worth it?

Hello guys, I just added this gorgeous aircraft to my 4.11.1 with SAS Modact 4 and had the same problem as others with the aircraft only working with the no weapons selected, I then added the Fokker triplane and everything was good to go. ???

I guess it has a file the Albatross doesn't, could you please update the mod or provide the necessary file for those that wish to use it outside of DBW 1916 and without any other of the WWI aircraft installed. ;)

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D

I am still on 4.10 and I am loving it.
I am not sure if I will ever move to 4.11 or 4.12.
Although seeing the crash effects for the 4.12 and how the airplane slides across the ground, does make me want
to move everything over to the 4.12 patch too. I will wait until we get these things sorted out.
Many things will have to be changed and updated for the big move.
It will take sometime to do it properly.

Well depends on one thing - if it should be on the outer model on inside the cockpit. The process would be for both actually quite similar, but outer model does not like many components and it would really lag the game if ten albatroses opened fire at once...

As for cockpit model, it would not be that complicated in Java, but it would require new cockpit - with hammers.

I tried to fly on it, but it's required a file WWIGunShells.eff in path 3do\Effects\GunShells. Everyone except that is working.
Someone have a properly file?

I've made some minor updates for the Albatros D.III 3d model, adding a new 3d model for the lower part of the wing radiator.
