Title: New sky textures Part 1 [4.09] [4.10] [4.11] [4.12]
Post by: tbauchot on February 14, 2015, 12:33:45 PM
Hi all,

here, for maps users, maps and missions builders, some new textures for the sky :

I had began this work in the idea of creating more cloudy heavy skies over northern Europe
in order to make more convincing atmospheres on the very nice maps WF of "Gilb".

So I decided to open a new topic on this subject and to provide all these new skies regardless
of my Mod: "WF maps updated".

In the download you will find all the skies used for my upgraded maps WF 40 & 44 as well as a new skies range
slightly less dense and suggesting parts of blue sky in the background.
Guests can also find images folder with the name of each sky and the entries for "map load.ini"
in order to make an easier choice !   ;)

After numerous tests I noticed that this cloud Mod :

"Clouds big 2.1" of Manysh fits perfectly with these skies.
(in this version the cloud are more nuanced in colors and brightness than in V.2.1a)

Please have a look at : https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,18405.0.html

Moreover, the size of the clouds in this mod helps mitigate the bug on the horizon simply by masking it !
in the conf.ini of the game by settling : LandGeom=3 it is possible to have perfect horizons
but it only works for a weather setting on "clear" or "good"
This bug exists with all types of skies (and principally from hight altitude.)
and it will be even stronger with denser skies as it is the case here !

So to summarize and for these reasons I recommend you this cloud mod !  ;)

The results are visually very correct on these weather settings :
Clear, Good, Poor, Blind, Rain and Thunderstorm...
However, I would not recommend you the setting : Hazy...

So for Dgen campaigns go into your  Dgen folder / Settings"name of the campaign or sub-campaign".dat  File
( for example : settingsDeBoe09.dat ) and set the [MapWeather] accordingly...

for example :

WF_1939Ardennes 5 65 0 10 10 5 5

Each number represents the  chance percentage of having a type of weather.
For example : 5% of clear weather, 65% of  good weather, 0% of hazy weather, etc...
The result of adding these number must be equal to 100.

And now, finally, surely better that my bad English, my last skies pics :

Nice, but do you have a 24 bit only version?
I'm asking because I'm using texture compression which makes these skies look more pixelated.

Very nice textures, Thierry ...!  :P

Many THX for sharing ...  ;)

Like Istvan, just wondering why several textures are in 24 bits (and weigh 4 Mb instead of just 1Mb if they were in 256 colours)

Hi all,

Thank you very much for your comments ! :)

Explanations on the different textures sizes :
When I started this work, I went into unknown territory.
So I got based on the larger size of the existing High Clouds textures to avoid
any compatibility issues with the game.
So I made textures in size and quality very modest
in compliance with a maximum size of 1MB.
that's why my first textures are in indexed colour mode
with the loss of quality that this implies.
However, even if the results were relatively good but not entirely satisfactory for my taste,
I do not want to stop in so good way and I wanted to do better !
So recently, I worked on new textures, this time in RGB mode and with an alpha channel.
Which is why their size are now of 4MB.
( High Clouds : TB_d , TB_d1 , TB_e0 , TB_e1 , TB_e2 , TB_f0 , TB_f0a , TB_f1b )
As these textures work well in the game, so my next projects will have similar characteristics ...

So, stay tuned... Thierry. ;)

... THX for your explanations regarding texture size Thierry, I should have opened them in my PhotoShop, then I'd have noticed there was an alpha layer, explaining the 24 bits ...  ;)

Open the downloaded folder TB_New_Skies_Textures/Skies textures/HighClouds and HighCloudsNoise and drop all the textures in the _Tex folder you have in your modded install (Modded Install/Mapmods/maps/_Tex/)

Hi Bombsaway,

Blue clouds, at far distance, on the horizon ?
I read somewhere that it was a bug, a limitation of the game ... This phenomenon is also present with conventional skies, but as the skies are blue almost the phenomenon is less pronounced. The clouds that appear blue in the distance, then blend in the sky ...
It's the same for the bug on the horizon that causes geometric shapes in the distance. There exists with all types skies but it is less apparent on conventional skies as they are more blue ...
In any case I recommend to you: Perfect mod + landgeom = 3  in conf.ini
This setting correct the cloud and horizon bug for weather set to clear or good. ;)
Please, see my first post. ;)

Hi Santobr,

Simply create in your folder #SAS / MapMods / Maps /... a folder :  _Tex ( for highcloud & highcloudnoise.tga ) and add for each map you wanted to use a folder with it's name .
In each of these folders put simply the load.ini of the map ( if these maps are already include in your modact game ) and then, you are able to edit the entries for the clouds.

Assuming that you have these maps in another version the game that you already own.
If not, then, you will have to download them.
 ;)

Gorgeous skies...top work.
I would aswell would like to use them in the default maps.
I am using HSFX 703.
I downloaded the extracted load.ini files from above and moved them to the following path:
MODS\mapmods\maps\Moscow\load.ini
and edited the appendix section.
When starting a mission in QMB I get the error or the game crashes.

I checked also the STD path
\Mods\STD\Maps\Moscow\load.ini
However I got the same error.

What am I doing wrong here?

In HSFX the way for installing maps is : Files/ maps / and here you will find the : the all.ini file . In this folder (maps), simply add (if it does not exist) a  _Tex folder and a folder for each map you want to édit...   ;)

If you want to have some folders for stock maps you can try this good mod by "VP" :

Also, if you want to install maps on a mod act please have a look at this topic :

I also use HSFX and my path for the Bessarabia load.ini is as follows:

I don't know if it's the smartest way to do it but it works :) Hope it helps

I'm going to ask you to excuse my ignorance.  But let me tell you what I have done in an effort to use your new maps, and you tell me what I have done wrong.  But then I will have two other questions.  First, I went in and put a "-" in front of the maps WestFront40 and WestFront44.  I then copied your two from this download into my /mapmods/maps folder.  In the file "Entries", there are some all.ini entries.  I substituted the lines in my all.ini file for your new ones.  I copied your _Tex items into my _Tex folder.  But the map will not load in FMB.  It gives me that load.ini error at the bottom of the screen "WestFront44/WF44W_load.ini".  I didn't do anything with the 3do folder or your Cloud Mod V1, because I didn't know what was supposed to happen with them.  Can you give some assistance to one not nearly as smart as you guys are?  Thanks for any help.

Just an idea, I don't know if it's good or bad. Does anyone remember "Bender's Ultimate Environment Mod"? It featured a large selection of clouds in its folders and was accompanied by a little installer. Could it be used as a means of installing these sky textures?

Since a long time I use the the Benders High Clouds !
You can find them in : Bender's  Environment/clouds256/ and here : 24 folder with different High Clouds and High Clouds Noise. ;)

Surely a wrong or missing character in your all.ini  !?
Try again and see... ;)

I'll look and see if that is the problem, but I copied/pasted your lines, but maybe I screwed it up someway or other.  And you said not to quote the entire first post.  I don't know how to do it any other way, just quoting part.  Sorry.  I guess that is one of the many things that comes from being over 72 yrs old.  Sad, but true.  Thanks for your reply.  I'm trying to use your mod but to this point not real successfully.

... simple, Ol'Navy, first and as you did up till now:

1) click on the "quote" button ===> the whole post will be copied in your reply

2) highlight (in blue) the passages you want to delete (to save SAS ressources and space) by hovering them with the mouse + left click maintained

Only keep the [quote author= bla bla bla ... and the last [/quote ... and of course the text you want to quote, remove your finger from the left click and hit the delete key ... done !

Now you can write your own text under what you just quoted ...  ;)

Hi all:

Just a quick question regarding environments: Would all, some, or none of these cloud textures be appropriate for ocean areas? I've seen Google satellite photos of the South Pacific but it only really shows cumulus clouds - no point trying to show the Earth with 10/10 cloud cover I guess. Also, the cumulus clouds are generally only over land - islands and such.

Thanks for any help.

Thank you.  I am often embarrassed to ask questions such as that, because I realize they are so simple to most of you here.  As usual, my less than smart question(s) are answered, as they have been for several years past.  Thank you very much.  Now, if I can just get those modded maps to show up.  Thanks again.

I think that Google will never show you satellite views with completely clogged skies. The important thing is for this application to display the ground, not the sky! ... But on the oceans as elsewhere there are atmospheric disturbances. This is also where the Typhoon and other tornadoes came from...
Ask to Charles Lindbergh the weather he had during his crossing of the Atlantic? The ceiling stretched from 15 to 3000 meters and it flew through ... ;)
However, pending a sky that fit you perfectly you can try Benders environment :

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=1786.0

There is in it a great collection of high clouds. :)

Or see to VP's sky textures :

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,44767.0.html

his skies are very nice and they could, I think, agree very well for the Pacific. ;)

Very cool immersion mod.
I've been testing some of your new skies in some of my NWA (North West Area of Operations) projects  ;D
Will post a screen or two here.

Soon you'll have request a sky thread and you'll be quite busy  :D :) ;D

The new skies certainly change a map immensely  ;)

This is one of those rare mods that after you install and try it, you wonder how in the world did I fly without it. Thanks Thierry. Outstanding!

In fact, this work is far from perfect, but I work, I try, I experiment and I share what is for me and for you a very important part of the simulation: The Sky ....   ;)

Regards, Thierry.

I just stumbled onto this thread. Fantastic looking! I have to wait a bit before downloading, but in the meantime I should ask -- will this work with 4.09/4.08? I ask because the high clouds I've ever seen or made myself have always been quite translucent. These wonderful creations have such high density/opacity. Was this done via the added transparency channel?

I hope this new cloud appearance is not dependent on having a much later game version... <fingers crossed ;)  >

Yippee! Thanks, Mick. I'm anxious to examine the textures and see how these clouds were designed... A d of course use them!
