Is there something wrong with map_c toolbox ?
« on: May 17, 2020, 01:32:33 PM »

On a Mymap_c, I draw a kind of a canal, 45° oriented, rgb 0 with a 3px brush, hardness 0.50
The red grid is 32x32.
The size of the map : 12096 x 9600 (multiple of 32).

After one pass in map_c toolbox that gives, in the FMB :

The two red circles show two visual defects, corresponding to the 32x32 grid.

Back to the map_c, I cut one of the suspected segment, along the grid :

And after a few manip that I won't describe because it's not the purpose, I paste it such as it is shifted 1px to the L and 1 px to the bottom
Of course I did so that there is no holes.
Notice that I use no blur, no rubber, only cut copy and paste. The pattern is exactly the same, so are the rgb values:

I repeat the same procedure for the second segment :

And here we are :

No defect anymore, the canal is straight and unbroken :

I tear one's hair out for monthes with that.
I thought it was one of those bugs from that good old Il-2 until I've found that thread: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=11908.0
I'm now firmly convinced there's something wrong with map_c toolbox, perhaps more related to the table than to the picture itself.

I'm convinced too that it is responsible of many visual bugs people report : black lines, tiles and so on

Could someone with programming skill have a look at this ?
map_c toolbox is a wonderfull tool. Without it, no map can be made. But if it could be corrected it would be just ... perfect

As a good practice for every mapmaker, when drawing rivers and streams, always make continuous lines. Look to your keypad. Think a pixel in the "5" key position. When drawing another pixel adjacent to this, always draw in "2", "4", "6" or "8" keys position (horizontal or vertical direction), never "1", "3", "7" or "9" (diagonal direction). Pixels in a stream should always share sides with each other, never only vertices. So your line will be continuous, what avoids this discontinuity issue you related.

To check continuity, after ending drawing a stream, use the "wizard" selection tool in your graphics processor (i use GIMP), and click on any pixel in the stream. The water course should be entirely selected. If any portion of stream figures out of selection, then you have a discontinuity where the selection ends.

Definitely not.
The line I draw is just for demo.
Whatever you do, you can't prevent this bug.
All the map show that sort of defect, especially along coastlines.
Usually mapmakers try to avoid it with excessive blurring and wide river.

Looks like a whacky one off problem.

Photoshop or gimp?

Whacky ?
I use Gimp but it has nothing to do with the problem.

I know my English is very bad so that's probably the reason I'm not understood.

I speak about the way the map_c is generated.
All the maps show that kind of problem, so it's not a one off problem.
Explain me why there always is a shift of 1px, every 32 px, from the map_c you draw and the rendering in the sim.
That's what I want to point out.
It has nothing to do with editor.
By the way, I'm sorry to tell you that I use gimp for 8 years and I know how to draw a line.

I'm not (not yet) a modder but here are a few screenshots of a future map I'm working on (southern California)
Ignore the tex, there are prototypes samples of my own 4096 tex.

Coast line:

Beach coast

Rocky island

Canal network

And yes they are only 30m wide

But I'm not satisfied with it, so I'm working on new ones mixed with ground plates, and yes, the colour of the water is different from the ocean
Who says it was not possible ?

Narrow rivers, a few tenth of meters wide, third color of water:

May be my work is nothing but full of shit, after all.
I don't know. It's up to you

It's definitely a language barrier... However, if you choose to call your own work 'shit' that's up to you.

My fault for trying to help. Try to keep a cool head to the next person who tries to help, if any at all.

Using the word "wacky" is a curious way of helping.
I won't disturb anyone from now on.

Could a moderator close that thread, please ?
Thanks in advance

Chrival,

How do you get 3 different water colours?

An important question!

How do you get 3 different water colours?

Hi Mandrill

Basically just as everybody, by adjusting the level of gray on the map_c
Usually in a range from 112 to 120, even more, depending on the underlying texture.
Plus something more.
I remove the shadenoise from the map.
In fact, with the use of 4096 tex, we don't need it anymore.

Here is some rgb 120 water

With shadenoise:

without:

Then, you can control the water color in relation to the underlying texture

I'm interested in how your work progresses. I think so far you have done very well.
