How to take off from an aircraft carrier in WAW
« on: September 19, 2019, 04:23:44 PM »

I cannot figure out how to take off from a aircraft carrier using a catapult in WAW?  From an outside view I see the plane attached to the catapult, however it does not get me up to enough speed and of course I end up in the drunk every time,  loaded with bombs or with out bombs.  The AI take off loaded.

Thanks.

1. Do you chock the plane over the catapult?

2. Do you let the engine spin up to full throttle before releasing the chocks?

3. Do you set the flaps to takeoff?

I tried doing the take off on auto pilot no go.

I will try your suggestions and see if that will work, thanks

I suppose you have checked it before,
but I remember being so stupid and failing to takeoff five or six times in a row before I was aware that I forgot to unfold wings!

Another common mistake is to fail in applying chocks in the exact place. You must be near the beginning of the catapult rails. If you are more or less correctly positioned, after applying chocks you will see that the plane suddenly 'jumps' to the exact location. If you do not notice any unexpected 'jump', it means that you aren't well positioned, and the catapult won't work. I recommend you to drive slowly to the catapult in external view and click repeatedly on 'chocks' until you can see that your plane 'jumps' an aligns to the catapult rails. After you get used, you can learn where you should stop and apply chocks in internal view (the 'jump' is still noticeable in this view).

Three more points:
1. Auto pilot does not work for take-offs, from a carrier or on land.  Odd that.
2. If you see carrier crewmen (most carriers have them), note their position from your cockpit windscreen once you successfully chock on the catapult.
3. On future missions, roll up till you see the crewman in the same relative position, chock and you're good to go.

Thanks for information guys.  I would be able to try taking off until later during the day.

Again, thanks.

Autopilot take off on land does work of course.

on a carrier with catapult you spawn in park position. Here's what I do:
1. switch on engine
2. switch to autopilot and wait
3. you will be "jumped" onto the catapult position when it's your turn. Wings will unfold...
4. immediately after the "jump" switch autopilot off
5. set flaps, stick to proper position (full back or neutral? depends on the aircraft!)
6. throttle up
7. release chocks and off you go.

on a carrier with no catapult:
1. engine on, unfold wings, set flaps
2. throttle up
3. release chocks
4. take off

You're correct of course and I gave an off the cuff answer that lacked any context.  I was doing a bunch of DGen Ops file testing (a/c & skins) using a combo of the F2 external view and manual, autopilot settings.  And when you do that things get weird as there is a bit of a delay between pressing the AP key and the AP kicking in.  This usually means that your #2 rams right into you and kills you both.  SO yeah, AP works fine if you hit it at the outset of a mission.

I tried this and it seems to work for me at least.

I tried QMB BAT Coaral sea CVE

AP wait for a while.  I used F2 view to see what was going on.

Engine starts, you eventually end up at the Cat spot.  WEP kicks in.

1st launch leaving AP on goes into the drink.

2nd launch as soon as the cat lunches I toggle AP OFF, then I toggle AP back ON quickly before end of deck. To me, it does look like the Corsair picks up speed. I get close to the water, but 3 launches so far and all ok. This may work for you?

Just do it in the order I posted.
AP off, THEN release chocks to launch the catapult....
AP launches from catapult do not work.

Why even bother asking these things when whatever we write is ignored.

As I stated in my last post it works I'm also inserting SAS~vampire_pilot's post from 9/20 just as a refresher for those who did not read it.
