GPU advice ?
« on: August 28, 2019, 06:29:48 AM »

Could use a little help as I am trying to find a proper (new or used) GPU for my ageing ASUS P6T SE MB game PC with a 2.67 gigahertz Intel Core i7 920 (4 core) and 16 GB memory, 500 watts PW supply, which also does not break the bank. Also the length of this GPU card shouldn't exceed 24 cm due space limitation ... GTX 1080 Ti comes to mind, but it seems to be outdated versus the newer RTX 2000 series ...

About the only game i play is Sturmovik GB etc. 1920x1080, but i wonder if playing it on a 4k monitor brings more fun if possible at all. Guess i'll need a better i7 PC then also.

Was looking at and Geoforce RTX 2060, but things seem to move with NVDIA.
Buying something 2nd hand is something else: risk of overclock rates and possible heat damage that might have affected it's condition ....

Found this site that has IL2 (probably 1946) incorporated in comparison lists: https://www.game-debate.com/

Decisions, decisions, and the wife will say NO anyway ... thnx J

P6T + i7-920 is a pretty weak combo these days. I've kicked out my last i7-920 5 years ago.
You should choose a GPU that matches the CPU capabilities.
A 1080ti is way over the top for such CPU, it will hardly be able to keep up with something like a GTX 960/970 or 1050/1060 for that effect.

Was afraid of that .... guess i am better off buying a whole new system ... but that will have to wait. I can play IL*2 GB for now, lol.
But a GPU now that also works when i buy some i7 or even i9 upgrade kit could be an idea ... thanks J

You can of course add a modern GPU to your existing system and deal with the CPU being the bottleneck.
It will be a real bad bottleneck though, because both the CPU is too slow to handle any powerful GPU, and the motherboard can't connect it accordingly (P6T has PCIe 2.0, Nvidia 600 and later series use PCIe 3.0).

Did not realize that PCIe 2.0 bottleneck. In my 'work' PC with ASUS x99 PRO USB 3.1 i have a (think) i7 3690 processor, and for now an Asus GTX 1050 ti NVDIA to handle a 4k monitor,
maybe i should us that in my game P6T PC temporarily, and get something else for the x99 PC. Decisions ....

In my opinion I really don't care about 1080; that too 4k because of my specifications and what they can do. The fact that you're running 1080 with your specs amazes me though as I'm just managing to squeeze 55 fps with my specs.

4k is a big thing and I do not think or know if a 1050 ti can handle it.. 4k is almodt double the resolution which uses double everything if so to say but I could be wrong. Look at YouTube for 4k benchmarks of a 1050ti and see if they can even do at least 60 fps.

4k 60fps+ Builds are usually stupidly expensive and every gamers wet dream, but I for one would ve more than happy to run BoS at 60 fps on 1080 res with high settings or medium (not max) or 1360*768 with max settings (I plan on upgrading my GTS 450 to a R9 280X).

Let's put this into dimension.
JollyJack has an i7-920 and a Radeon R7-360.
Ghost has an i5-2500k and a GTX 750 (right?).

That means Ghost's CPU is roughly 60% faster, whereas JollyJack's GPU is 25% faster in turn.
Makes sense that JollyJack reaches 60FPS@1080p in IL-2 1946 if there's not too many objects around.

Either case, 4K's lower GPU limit is at about the 1070Ti/1080, if you wanna have fun with it in the longer run, it absolutely calls for a 1080Ti/2070 or better.
For BoS with 60FPS@1080p at maxed settings with no drops, the sweet spot is my 970. I'm running that one @1440p and I have steady 60FPS but with few settings lowered one tick (shadows and horizon distance to be precise).

Only now i saw the 'discussion' going further .. my old R7 360 is an Asus OC version, probably why it handles 60 fps. I even have 2 monitors connected, doesn't really seem to have problems with that either. Very occasionally i have a hiccup, especially when new planes are spawned it seems.

But i have been looking around a little, and think a RTX 2080s might be an option, prices are 30% lower than for a RTX 2080 ti. But still a hefty amount of dough.

My old Asus P6T seems capable at some overclocking:

http://tech-reviews.co.uk/reviews/asus-p6t-se-x58-i7-motherboard-review/6/

Got a quality large cooler sitting on the i7 920  ..... alas i have the simple P6T SE motherboard.

Overlocking an old i7-920 is a bit like trying to breathe life into a zombie.

There is no i7-8750, only i7-8750H and that's a mobile CPU,not suitable for Desktop Computers.
