Is There a Mod for Faster Rotating Prop Spin Texture?
« on: August 20, 2019, 09:28:18 AM »

Hello All.

Was wondering if there is anything, either downloadable or user modifiable, that modifies the revolutions of the visual prop spin texture (not the 3D propeller itself) without actually modifying the simulated prop RPM.

Just looking to get the prop spin texture to spin much faster than default rate.  Preferably matching actual prop RPM.

Anything to get it to look more like a proper propeller disk, and not like we're looking at an old 24fps film shot with mechanical shutter cam.   ]evil6[

Thanks.

I suspect that the spinning prop texture is indeed keyed to the simulated rotation speed. It's just that the ratio to RPM and game tick rate have the expected effect of making the prop graphic take on a sometimes odd rotation rate. A kind of stroboscopic effect, which is normal.

Using a more blurred graphic is my preferred solution. After all, our eyes see a rapidly spinning prop as a completely blurred disk. It's only via photography, when a suitably fast shutter speed is in effect, that the prop blades start to become isolated as such, with an ever faster shutter speed further sharpening the blades. Unless one wants to simulate movies or guncam clips, why not go for the highly blurred representation of the visual experience?

Even if one were to alter code to make the prop disk turn at some other rate, there's no guarantee that this will help. Because one would still be subject to the same rotation ratio integer problem and hence the same strobe effect! ;)

You'd have to decouple the prop from engine/gearbox RPM, setting a fixed, preferred spin rate. But this would detract from the real effects of a varying prop RPM. Can't win on all fronts, I fear.

... take a look here ...  :)

One of the great improvements of The_Woz mod, is that it gives some density when the prop is viewed from the side, contrary to stock effect ... ;)

You're right about the difficulty to render real life prop rotation, and the very poor result we get in most videos, simply because of a much too high camera shutter speed, that gives that ridiculous strobe effect    :-X

The thing is, most people who've never attended a WW2 warbirds meeting end up believing that what they see in videos is what they would see in real life ...  :-X

That's why I really like Paddy Patrone's vids, as he first never uses stupid music, because the symphony of the engines is way better than hard rock or whatever, and always pays great attention to the shutter speed of his camera (should be around 50Hz), so as to avoid the silly prop strobe effect ...  ;)
