graphics extender feature status and wishlist
« on: May 23, 2019, 02:24:10 AM »

Poll for the next feature: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,61559.0.html

Since there are many areas of possible improvement I would like to figure out what the most wanted features are.
Feel free to suggest anything - If I think it's possible to do I will add it to the list.

Done
Included in the latest build and enabled by default.

Experimental
These features are included in the latest build but are disabled by default.

WIP
These features are not yet included in the latest build.
  • wave foam / shore waves
  • different wave strength depending on weather
  • mipmap filter settings

Possible to do now - roughly sorted by how complicated the task is, from simple to complicated
  • moon/moonlight
  • higher map_T resolution (see post #14)
  • terrain/cirrus reflections on water
  • 3D waves
  • terrain self shadowing
  • terrain shadows on objects

Maybe possible in the future
  • stars - stainless had something in the works here which is probably reusable by il2ge
  • better water - I think this needs HDR lighting first

  • weather effects like rain,snow,lightning
  • higher terrain resolution
  • object/cockpit self shadowing
  • bigger object rendering distance
  • object fade in when it comes into visible distance
  • object reflections on water
  • more options for object materials (e.g. specular map, normal map, multiple layers for a single mesh)
  • better clouds / cloud shadows / cloud reflections on water

We are blessed by your presence and your work slibenli, thank you :)

Object rendering distance is my number one wish but hang on, it may not be possible at all and probably not needed if trees, in example, "blur fade progressively in" (if you know what I mean) instead of popping up, that Sir, would be a big leap forward.

Slibenli

Great work, if possible would love to see better clouds. FSX has some nice effects here

And anything to do with atmospheric conditions, better mist, fog, rain, snow etc

cheers mate

Clouds (not cirrus) are among the most complicated things to simulate - I'm gonna leave that for later ;)

No idea if related to you awesome work, but since it's lighting, maybe ?
Nav lights that are barely visible, at very (very) short range, at mid day, and highly visible, at long range (but not blooming) during a dark night without fog.

Stars and moon  to complete the night fighting atmosphere.

Apart from this very personal pet subject, the rendering of distant objects (and smoke effects) , with a credible fade in/out, is the next giant leap expected.

That should at least partially be achieved HDR lighting.
Light scattering in fog by light sources other than the sun would need some workaround.

1st - I agree the pop-up objects can be a distraction
2nd - Realistic HDR lighting

Keep up the good work Slibenly
