Der Dosenöffner

Recently flown a breathtaking mission with Hs 129B-2. Take the pop-corns and listen, please! ;D

Target was, of course, an enemy tank column. Weapons got by DGen were a set of SC-250 and SC-50. I'm the tail-end Charlie of a three-ship flight. We took off escorted by four Italian MC.200. Seemingly, the whole VVS was expecting us! :(
Indeed, the DGen added to enemy defenders already in ops file, a bunch of "enemy hunters", "enemy bombers" (with escort), etc. I suspect it is Red-biased... :D
Well before having reached target, our escort was engaged by first wave of enemy fighters, remaining behind. We reached target where two flights of enemy fighters were waiting for us. I had just before padlocked the flight leader, following it and leaving number two as straggler, since it had relented in sight of target, positioning himself well behind dead astern of flight leader. This to have enemy fighters attacking more probably it instead of me. ;)
We had time, though, to drop our bombload, with no avail, as usual (I think this game has a way to perform low altitude bombing very disappointing, practicing an odd level bombing - but without aiming devices - instead of the more effective dive-toss). Then, while both my mates were shot down, I started a fierce fight against I-16 and MiG-3. Applying tactics I learned on the great Shaw's book ("Fighter Combat - Tactics and Maneuvering") for fight against more maneuverable aircraft, I always turned "head-to-head", giving some more rudder during turns when ahead an enemy (it's the sole trick I found to fool the "William Tell Marksmanship" of game versions from 4.11.1 onward), and exploiting the heavy armament of the German tank-buster (two 20 mm cannons, in addition to two MG 17) to hit little Polikarpov's and fast MiG's. Then reached the fray also four Su-2, returning from their bombing mission, and surprisingly willing to practice some dogfight against me! o_O

In the end I was forced to bail out, but left on the ground the two I-16, shot down. :)

I wonder if in reality the Henschel Hs 129 ever shot down any e/a.

Cheers,
GB

Hi Greybeard!

Have a look here:

http://www.cieldegloire.fr/luft_schg1.php

As you can see, those birds won against fighters.... :)
There are more Schlachtgeschwader listed. These are really bad birds.

Have a nice day!

Hi Bigmug,

and thanks for the link.

Probably I'm missing something, but can't detect where victories surely credited to Hs 129B are. I see only second Gruppe did have Hs 129B, but mixed with Fw 190A... :-|

Hi!

Fascinating topic....just read the Wikipedia entry for more information. Seems the Schlachtgeschwader had another operational structure than Jagdgeschwader. And some strange equipment...

You are right, it's not confirmed, that the air victories of SchG 1 were carried out by HS129.
But Feldwebel Wilhelm Morsch from 8.(Pz)/Schlachtgeschwader 2 was credited on 14.09.43 for downing an Il-2. Seems that this unit was equipped with HS129 throughout its existence and specialized on tank hunting.
So, downing a flying tank is only typical German consistent behaviour.  ;)

Thanks for having a spotlight on this topic. These groundlevel acrobats really were tough guys. Ten sorties a day weren't uncommon.

Have fun in creating some missions!

Regards,
BigMug

Indeed, it's what reported at the link you gave.

I'm updating my "Fall Blau" Hs 129B-2 DGen campaign. Stay tuned. ;)
