I had a successful first torpedo run:  Bomb Delay 9.0 sec.

Thank you for sharing.  8)

Hello All

I've come across a problem first highlighted to me by my good friend <Gunny>
He noticed when making a long mission (89 mins) for the Short .....that it doesn't seem able to maintain height over distance

I made a test run....

Gallipoli Map

Made a mission that started at 500mtr, had about 12 way points each one slightly lower than the last, rounded the headland and flew down the Dardanelles straight at 100mtr to attack a stationary freighter at 10mtr with torp.
Total mission time 36 minutes

= Short never made it to the headland  :))

Reset all way points to 500mtr bar the last three at 30 / 20 /10mtr

= Gentle descent from 500mtrs.....majority of flight at less than 20mtrs

= Short made a successful landing about 1km from target with engine idling  :))

Also noticed that when flying the Short seems to blip engine /slows down/fires engine again= lower altitude

I seem to remember this type of thing happening to either the AEG or the Aviatick (?)
One didn't have enough power to take off and the other would gently descend from altitude.....
I seem to remember dreamk fixed it by altering the size/ power of the propeller....but I could be wrong

Anyone have any have any ideas that would keep the old girl in the air for longer than 10 mins......... :(

Cheers

Alfie

Thanks for the post and your spot on..
Great plane and Pete did a very good job on it...

Only if it had more power to stay in the air.....   ;)

Farmans have a similar problem. Keep it going at full speed. Say 160 kph. It won't go that fast, but should maintain height. Don't let it go below 1000m.

Ah...apologies David, I failed to point out that we're having problems with the AI + Autopilot function with the Short
Both of us can fly the Short to a target and successfully attack with torpedoes  ;D
Problems occur when you've set up more than 1 Short in FMB or when you hit the Autopilot switch
I thought at first it might be the enormous weight of the torpedo was too much for the frail under powered Short, but the problem still persists with a small bomb load and also when there's no ordnance.......

Very odd

Cheers

Alfie

PS It suddenly struck me it may be an all up weight problem........small fuel load might help ?
     Might be a 4.12 thing.......I'll make a 4.10  scenario

     More testing methinks.........Marvelous  :))

I have been running the short with only 50 % fuel load..  ;)

.................well that was interesting

First the bad news......whatever I try I can't get the Short to fly/ drop ordinance whilst either AI or Automatic pilot in DOF / 4.12  :(
Reducing fuel levels to 10% made no difference as did various bomb combinations

However....the good news, the Short is a very effective torpedo bomber in DBW 1916 / 4.10   ;D

She maintained correct altitude at a speed of 160 - 70 kph throughout the 36 min mission, dropped to 20mtr on the torpedo run and delivered on target, also managing successfully to escape the blast radius  8)

As I pointed out during the WIP phase of these I tried to make a torpedo class but failed miserably, no idea why as I have made various weapon classes before.

The nearest thing I could find was I think a Mk.7  that could be considered near to the sort of weight the aircraft could carry and that was from Dreamk but when loaded it was some huge bulbous bomb thing, clearly of no use and most likely being picked up from some other weapon pack.

I settled for the Mk.12 in game I think which is actually far too heavy for the puny engine, this was a real issue for the actual in service plane, so either that or no torpedo at all.

Not sure why there is a issue for the AI or auto dropping bombs although I must confess most of my trials were about getting the aircraft into the sky piloted by me or the auto.

Only hope guys is if one of the coders here can make something I could not or I can remove the torpedo load out, the real aircraft used bombs more often than not because of the weight problems I believe so we would not be far out.

There has always been this odd behaviour where FM performance was quite a lot different between 4.10 and 4.12, again as you know most of what I ship to you is just enough to get the thing moving, I live in hope one day someone will make work what I could not.

Aircraft was only ever tested and intended for 4.12 with ModAct 5.30 and DBW 1.71.

Take care.

Wishing you all the very best, Pete. ;D
