Tarawa Revisited. A New Texture.
« Reply #12 on: August 23, 2010, 12:27:27 PM »

My first texture release was for the Tarawa map and although I'm proud of the first texture
I felt it was time to revisit Tarawa to get a new texture with a little better detail and
one that would cover the rather large shallow area that the map has. I hope you all enjoy this
new texture and I hope that this may get this map a little attention from a map maker out there
to rework the land and bring this map up to date.

IL 2 1946 Water shallows texture by SAS~Bombsaway

Although this texture is for Tarawa, it goes very nicely into the Cat_Midway map as well. I
communicated with dunkelgrun aka 242Sqn_Cat and asked if he minded if I made a new texture
for the Cat_Midway map and he agreed. Well, to kill two birds with one stone I hope you will
enjoy this texture in both maps.

Edit: You may/will need the Unified Map Mod here...
Thank you  walter_solito for pointing that out. I must have had a brain fart when I posted and forgot that. :-[

Here is a texture I had made for Redkos Palau map when he first came out with it. I thought I had it
uploaded but cant find it so I'll post again. ;D

Install: Go into Maps/Redko_Palau and inside there is a load.ini Open it with notepad and down at
the bottom you will see Water2=   Place a ; in front of that one and then copy and paste this entry
just bleow the other one...

Water2 = water/BA_Shallows_RedkosPalau.tga,-2

so it looks like this...

Water0   = water/water.tga
Water1   = water/water.tga
Water2 = water/BA_Shallows_RedkosPalau.tga,-2
;Water2   = water/CoralCoastLine.tga
;Water2 = redko_tex/Palau/palau_coral2.tga
;Water3   = redko_tex/Palau/palau_coral2.tga
Water3   = redko_tex/Palau/eau_verte.tga

Credit goes to Redko for this great map. It is one of my all time favorites for the Pacific.

Here is a texture I have been trying to get right for the desert maps. I'm not sure if its that good so I figure I'll put it up for download and get some feed back from you guys. Let me know your thoughts on it. :)

I've put it into the new load.ini for the Djibouti map and it looks better than the previous one ... will upload the updates with your texture included when there are some more faults to correct for that map ...

Missed these somehow? maybe i didn't realise there was an update and assumed there was more advice being handed out ,oops!

quickly tried these on the Redko Dsert repaint and they look great! personally prefer the bluer one but that is up to the individual, lovely to have a choice anyway ;)

tried them also with ,4 after them and imho they blend in better/look more to scale with the landscape on this map, and with no tiling effect :)

Please carry on with your water textures they add great immersion to every map i use them on!!

Thanks Dak. I have not tried them with a ,4 yet to make the texture look smaller. I'll have to try that after work today. Thanks, thats the kind of feedback I'm looking for. :)

SAS~Bombsaway

When you get a chance have a try with your shallows textures on Palau map at ,4 i think i prefer these on that setting as well, been using them like that for a while, have a quick QMB flight at 3000m they look great!

I have no idea if that setting is less FPS friendly ( i know nothing) but am lucky enough to get good FPS on that map with a very busy mission, with my GRX settings which are quite high.

That is one of the problems/joys with IL-2, with the literally millions of  permutations of GRX's cards, different settings and even just settings within IL-2 itself, it takes a bit (LOT :)) of experimenting to get things looking the best you can on ones own personal setup.

By the way it was screenshots your original Shallows texture and Redko's Okinawa repaint that inspired me to Buy IL-2! previously i thought it just looked too horrible in its standard form to be worth trying...with mods how wrong i was!!

Bombsaway, I also had tested your shallows in Puerto Rico a short while ago. I wanted to test more, but then my GFX sucked which spoiled my PC fun. ;)
I will check out some other shallows as well, the ones I tested where the ones from June 18th, IIRC..

Looked like this:

(load.ini:...
Water2 = water/BA_Shallows_SeaBed.tga,-2)

Cheers ;D
