« on: October 13, 2018, 04:54:18 PM »

Hi all a friend recently offered me a old Desktop PC and i'd like to make it suitable for IL-2
Name of PC: Dell optipex 8100 L
Pictures of it (This one is mine) :

Id like to set a GTX 550 ti on it with 4giga of RAM (He also need a internal hard disk of 100 Go)
My problem is : My power supply is only 240W is it enough ?( i try to find by myself) if no maybe it will become one when i'll install the Hard disk
He only have 1 Go of RAM  ::( ::( and 10 giga memory

Yes, it is.

Too little power means your computer won't boot or it shuts down.

However, the quality of the power supply unit (PSU) is equally important: low quality PSU may very well fry up your computer. So don't buy the first and the cheapest high power PSU you come by. Google the model you are considering before you buy it.

The Thermaltake <Gunny> linked should be a decent one.

To answer the OP: No, 240W is not enough.
You can see yourself e.g. here: https://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator

240W is typical Dell style: They put in what's barely capable to run the current config.
The base system, without Graphics card (using CPU integrated graphics) gets along with around 200W.
However the GTX 550Ti TDP os 116W (and overclocked cards from most vendors take a little more).

Nvidia's recommendation is a 400W PSU, actually a 350W will do as well.

That is true, but I would suggest slightly more powerful PSU (500 -700 W) to leave some room for future expansions.

My goal is very simple I just want a desktopo PC only for Il-2 so no worry after some modification to make it good for Il-2 it will never be upgraded
Here's a list of what I plans to do for it
-Change the power supply (as you say it is a real problem)
-Change the graphic card (I'm looing for a GTX550 ti)
-Add some SSD because this desktop pc have only A 40giga with Windows on it

I hope the processor wich is a Intel celeron D will not be a problem for Il-2 (because if yes i'll buy another PC something better
And I would put on the other what I had planned to put on the old )

I try to make it cheapest but suitable  as possible

Celeron D is one crappy processor, but should be adequate.

That is excatly what I was thinking.  If you invest a little bit ( ~ 20 €) more on the PSU now it is very easy to upgrade later: you only need to buy a new CPU and a new motherboard and you may leave everything else as it is.

Which one exactly?
It's a bit confusing since a Dell Optiplex 8100 doesn't seem to exist, let alone with a Celeron D.
We need the precise specs to tell more.

Concerning the PSU Shakaali of course is right when saying "the more the merrier".
PSUs wear out, what's enough today might be on the edge next week and will fail next month in that case.

Sugest visit https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-your-own-pc,2601.html   Need read, study, do comparison quality/price...  the best way to have a great computer is built selecting part by part.
