Salute,
If you go into the game.
IL=2 >paintschemes > skins > A5M4
If you are lucky there will be a file in there > Void
on this you can use paint programs to paint a skin.

I use a free program called GIMP 2 which I use for maps.
I usually replace the white in the void file with a transparent
layer and the create another layer under neath to add my colours to

when you have used your program to colour your layers you will probably
find the file size is to big.

For instance it will be 3mb rather than 1mb which I believe some of the older Mods use.

What you can do in GIMP is use image mode indexed this reduces the colours to one of
the 256 in the regular pallet and that will bring your file size down.

Reduce or flatten to one layer and that should be it.

I hope that re engages the little grey cells.

Search on this web site for more complete and more accurate information.

There are a lot of good articles with very good information in.

... skin folders must exactly bear the name that is in the left column in the air.ini, otherwise the game will not "see" them ...  ;)

Example (in bold):

[AIR]
A-20C             air.A_20C 1                                   usa01 SUMMER
A-20G             air.A_20G 1                                   usa01 DESERT
Ar-196A-3         air.AR_196A3 2                                g01   SUMMER
