Request / Discussion: Have larger AA guns ever been considered
« on: September 07, 2018, 06:37:48 AM »

Hello all,

lately I have quite gotten into BAT. Truly a tremendous piece of work.  :)
While trying to recreate some local German Flak positions for custom missions, I noticed that apparently the larger German AA guns like the 10,5cm Flak 38 and the 12,8cm (!) Flak 40 have never been modded, or even publicy started by anyone that I am aware of.

I think those large beasts would be a welcoma addition to the WW2 scenarios, especially now that we have such a large collection of late war allied bombers on our hands. It should make bombing raids over Europe a little more interesting, even at high altitudes. the largest AA's we have, like the German 8,8cm just don't quite cut it at really high altitudes anymore.  :-X

I am no modder myself, so take what I say with a grain of salt, but: Shouldn't those guns, or at least their stats, be relatively easy to create? Even just a "Franken"-AA with the model of the 8,8cm (maybe enlarged) and changed gun stats?

What do you think? Would they be a worthwhile addition to the game?

Hi Riederbirk ,

Solely as user end type , not a modder , if they were in the game I would use them.
In terms of what to add , there are still other objects , vehicles , armour and ship types
I'd prefer to see - but this is your thread on heavier AAA Guns.
You can do this yourself - be careful , and do your homework - by altering the technics.ini file
using an existing gun type and changing its working parameters.
Be advised that if you fly online , your install would not be compatible unless you disable this work , or share your
technics.ini file with those you are flying with.

At one time CY6 had a mod for big guns.  .I think it was called SuperFlak .
I have looked but can't seem to find it on line... It works very well .

@Gunny,

I know which mod you are talking about.
Unfortunately, CY6's work only simulated faster firing AAA in order to save time not having to place as many guns for map builders  :)
What I want are larger and realistic guns, not "automatic 88s"  ;D

@Kopfdorfer, I will look into it. I might even play around trying to create a usable 10,5/12,8/12,8 twin model. I just need to find some good drawings first...

Aren't ships already using heavy AAA? For instance 10.5 cm SK C/32 from Niobe:

Code: [Select]
Gun                CannonAntiAirSK_C33
AttackMaxDistance    17700.0
AttackMaxRadius      17700.0
AttackMaxHeight      12500.0
HeadMinYaw               0
HeadMaxYaw             360
GunMinPitch            -10.0
GunMaxPitch            +80.0
HeadMaxYawSpeed          8.5
GunMaxPitchSpeed        12.0
ChainfireTime            0.0
DelayAfterShoot          3.75

@Max, you might have overread the "AA" part in the title  :D

@Shakaali. True enough, the navy-type 10,5cm gun exists, at least stats-wise.

Flak is already too accurate and very effective. I can't see what a bigger gun brings to the party.

These are the guns I have considered so far:

Germany:
-I am traveling with my laptop so I can't check right now: Do we have a Flak 41; the improved 8,8?
-10,5cm Flak 38 (Maybe this one can be skipped, as the improved Flak 41 apparently had better or similar performance)
-12,8cm Flak 40: Single, Twin (Dear lord), stationary & train car

Japan:
-Type 3, 12cm
-Just for fun: Type 5, 15cm prototype. Those poor B-29s  ;D
-Not sure about medium-large japanese AA. Maybe the 10cm gun would make sense?

USSR:
-KS-30, 13cm post-war development taking inspiration from the german Flak 40

USA:
-120mm M1 Gun

UK:
-Green Mace, post-war automatic (!) 12,7cm prototype
-Do we have the QF 3,7-inch gun?

I know, most of these guns would most likely be over-the-top deadly, but I think they would add a lot of atmosphere to large Bomber Raids over the Reich and the japanese islands.  :)

No we don't. Would be a great addition for Battle of Britain and suchlike.

I totally agree that this would be awesome. For more realism in some scenarios where those bigger guns were used (Germany for ex.). Maybe this is a challenge and inspiration for modders. :)
