Guide to parameters of Map Texts.
« on: September 06, 2018, 07:31:08 AM »

It seems I am unable to start a topic in the Mapworx section.
Admins please redirect if this thread should be elsewhere.

I am relabeling a Map to serve as a different geographic area than it originally
was designed for , and for which a Map does not exist ( Operation Nordwind , in Alsace , 1945).
All I need to do for the Map to serve , is to alter place names on the map , and to title it appropriately -
with all due credit to the map-mapmaker , of course.

I have been provided with an extracted map , but am finding the specifications for the label parameters
- font , size , colour , disappearance/appearance when zooming in and out very time consuming to
figure out.
Is their a comprehensive read me , or a tutorial which outlines how to configure these parameters correctly ?

Thanks ,

WxTech supplied me with this info sometime ago which I used in the BOB40 mission making template mod.

  The texts.txt file controls place names on maps in the Builder and in the game. The six numbers, in order from left to right, are:

X coordinate, in meters, as measured from the map's left edge.
Y coordinate, in meters,  as measured from the maps bottom edge.
Visibility control with zoom. 7 = always seen; 6 = seen when zoomed in somewhat.
Label position. 0 = offset to L; 1 = centered; 2 = offset to R.
Font size. 0, 1 or 2, from small to large.
Color. 0 to 17.

I believe the colors are:
0 = Black
1 = Red
2 = Blue
3 = Green
4 = Gold
5 = Purple
6 = Aqua
7 = Maroon
8 = Navy
9 = Emerald
10 = Olive
11 = Magenta
12 = Teal
13 = Orange
14 = Turquoise
15 = Brown
16 = Matte Green
17 = White

Firstly thank you for answering my query.

Okay , this is an excerpt from the LaChute Map .txt file.
Clearly the multinomials are the x , y coordinates.
The text speaks for itself.

Which of the next 4 numbers is for which function ?

554607 341264 6 1 0 10 Papenburg
556146 252887 6 1 0 10 Rheine

If someone doesn't know offhand which numeral is which function and what the effective ranges of choice are ,
I will do some testing and report back.

I would have thought this was old hat to mapmakers ,
but maybe someone else like me will find it useful.

Kopfdorfer, just go into the map folder and open the texts.txt file. Then manually substitute your own list of place names for the names already in the .txt file, being careful not to change the numerical coordinates. Save. Re open the map. And voila, all the places will have new names.

You don't even have to open the map FMB.

Thanks Mandrill , I'm already past that point , and now I want to know how to
manipulate all the numbers.
I know , I know , dead cats and all that.
I never liked cats anyway ( apologies to Uzin !)

I figured out how this format was constructed by examining map label positions and appearances, and then by experimentally altering values. Because I too could find no detailed info anywhere at that time. Not that I conducted a rigorously thorough search, though. ;) It's just that I thought something so apparently simple might be worked out in a shorter time than spent looking for a key that seemed to be hidden from a more cursory digging.

The easiest way may be:

Open the map with the map builder.
Select "Ansicht(View?)/Objekt" and then the last entry, "Text."
Press strg (ctrl) and klick left.
A marker appears and also an object window
Select "Text" there.
Type in the name and select your other choices.

Existing markers are hard to spot and even harder to select (somewhere above the name) on a map if there are other objects around.
So select "Ansicht /Objekt" and "Filter" then.
Select "Hide all."
Hiding will need its time with a populated map.
Select the filter again an click to "Show text."
Then there is nothing to select then the markers.

Save the map an see what you have done by opening the texts.txt :-)
