Stuart Slade has written an interesting series of books with an alternate timeline, beginning with "The Big One".  Its premise is that Germany responded to a request for terms from Lord Halifax, Halifax takes Churchill's place as PM, and WWII has a totally different look, and ending.  The Big One was followed by other books, set before and after.  Two that provided the inspiration for these single missions are "A Mighty Endeavor" and "Kazan Thunderbolts". 
You start out flying Hawk 81s for the South African air force in East Africa, and finish flying P-47s on the Volga Front in Russia.
