Henschel Hs 129 engine management
« on: February 17, 2018, 08:28:36 AM »

Hi folks,

I'm putting this up here for reference in the hope that it doesn't get lost and because I suffered from handling issues myself, thinking that I couldn't fly the plane without engaging combat power all the time.

Takeoff Checklist:
  • Prop Pitch Manual (Right Shift + P)
  • Max fine pitch (0%) (Right Shift + -) ("-" is "ß" key on german keyboard)
  • Mixture rich (somewhere along 80%, 100% is for engine startup only)
  • Boost mode on (Ctrl + B), this unlocks takeoff power (1.5 ATA, limit 1 minute)
  • Trim 50% tail heavy
  • Rudder trim neutral
  • Takeoff flaps (single press on the flaps button, default "F", the flaps automatically extend to takeoff pos)
  • Apply full throttle quickly when you are ready to go. There is no torque effect on the henschel (props rotate in opposite direction), but you need max airflow on the rudder to keep the plane straight.
  • Quickly counter any breakout tendencies with quick full rudder strokes and, if neccessary, quick short diff brake steps

Climb Checklist (after takeoff):
  • Prop Pitch Auto (Right Shift + P), this lets your engines maintain combat/climb power RPM settings (2750 RPM)
  • Boost mode off (Ctrl + B)
  • Full throttle (1.25 ATA, limit 30 minutes)
  • Raise gear (G)
  • Retract flaps (Shift + F)

Cruise Checklist:
  • Prop Pitch Manual (Right Shift + P)
  • Adjust Prop Pitch to 2350 RPM (Right Shift + +/-) ("+/-" keys on german keyboard are "ß/´") (RPM gauges are located in engine nacelles)
  • Throttle to 1.1 ATA (max. continuous power, no limits)
  • Mixture normal (50% IIRC)

Combat Checklist:
  • Prop Pitch Auto (Right Shift + P), this lets your engines maintain combat/climb power RPM settings (2750 RPM)
  • Full throttle (1.25 ATA, limit 30 minutes)
  • Mixture rich (somewhere along 80%)
  • Use boost (Ctrl + B) in emergency situations only, limit is 1 minute

Concerning the auto prop pitch system and the constant speed propellor unit: It's intendet only for climb and combat whereas under all other circumstances the pilot is supposed to manually adjust the propellor pitch himself.
The mixture unit works the same as in the P40 meaning that the pilot does not adjust the mixture manually but selects the mixture mode (Lean - Normal - Rich - Extra Rich).
Each setting is chosen by adjusting the lever to a certain percentage value.

Cheers!
Mike

Hi Sotrebror... I took the liberty of creating a PDF version of your checklist for posterity.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/43a2hib7sj28wiq/HS%20129%20Check%20list.pdf

Thanks for the Info. I love that plane I want to create a campaign for it (In Il2 1946), but I need some free time and that has become a luxury for me...still I'm going to try.

Good luck.

Thanks Aioros, nice job with that PDF.
Please take care that the checklist is valid of IL-2 Great Battles only, not for IL-2 1946.

Cheers!

Yes my friend I know...I have seen some videos from BOX and It seems that it is great, some day I will get a copy but right now I'm saving to buy a GTX 1080 Ti first, hoping that the prices become rational again.

Hey Mike in a side note I have a question...about the BOX series does it have a good mission builder? Is it possible to create good offline campaigns?
