The presets are not tied to screen resolutions, they merily affect rendering distances of certain objects.
For instance, when you select "Ultra", the tree rendering distance is 1.5x of what it is on "High" setting (whatever the actual values are).

Thanks for the clarification, Mike, so if I understand correctly, presets mostly affect what and how you see on the ground (the scenery), that is, Ultra is more essential for a mudmover using realistic navigation than for a fighter jockey using icons. Correct?

Yes that's what I understand.
Once the "10km rendering bubble" for airplanes has been solved (the devs promised to do something about it, but didn't give any schedule yet), then the presets might affect aircraft rendering too, but at the moment it's just ground and scenery objects.
