Hitler's Operation Barbarossa, the plan to conquer the Soviet Union, was launched on June 22, 1941. By the time the snows started to fall that same year, the Germans had taken control of most of western Russia. They were at the gates of Moscow; they were in the Crimea at Kerch; and they were at the gates of Leningrad in the north. In the north, Leningrad proved to be a tough nut to crack. Hitler planned to encircle and starve the city and then wipe it off the face of the earth. In October, the Germans launched an operation to capture Tikhvin (off the IL-2 map and to the east) and then meet up with Finnish troops who were at the Svir River (on the eastern side of Lake Ladoga). They captured Tikhvin in a snowstorm on November 8, severing the last rail line from Moscow to Lake Ladoga. That's when temperatures began to fall and reached -20 and -40 below zero with heavy snowfall.
Some I-16 type-17 ski-equipped aircraft are being transferred to Kobona on the eastern side of Lake Ladoga. There they will help defend the Ice Road and work with the 54th Army to prevent the Germans from moving any further northward.
