A 12-mission campaign for the F4U-1D in which you will fly for the U.S. Marines in VMF-511 from the escort carrier USS Block Island CVE-106 in the battle for Okinawa and the suppression of Japanese airfields in the Sakishima Islands during May 1945.

The large aircraft carriers got most of the attention during WW2 while the smaller escort carriers got little attention, or respect. This is a campaign that showcases one of the small escort carriers during the battle of Okinawa in May 1945 - the USS Block Island.

The new USS Block Island (CVE-106) joined the fight in early May as a part of Task Unit 52.1.3. On board the carrier are eight F4U-1D Corsairs, eight F6F-5N Hellcats, two F6F-5P's, and twelve TBM-3 Avengers, all of MCVG-1 (Marine Carrier Air Group -1). Escort carriers normally carried the FM-2 Wildcat or F6F Hellcat as their main fighters, but now, the Marines have arrived with more firepower in their Corsairs.

Missions are non-historical but are based on the types of missions that might have been flown. Historically, VMF-511 did not shoot down any Japanese planes during the battle for Okinawa but I have included some air-to-air combat in these missions to make the campaign more interesting.

*Must have the Sakishima MOD map.

I made this in the vp_Modpack which does not have this map in the list of maps in the Full Mission Builder. However, it is still possible to have this map. The only thing needed is to add a line of text in the "all" file which is in #SAS/Mapmods/Maps/

Add the following line to the "all" file...
 IJ_Sakishima IJ_Sakishima/load.ini

*You also have the option of changing textures to the map...
In this download there is a file "Mapmods" which has the "load" file for new textures and also has two textures in the _Tex folder. All these files need to be added to your Maps folder.

The new textures for Sakishima are from the TNK Setouchi map (which is already included in SFS files) and city and coast textures from Cyberolas' singapore (with no tree files).

*The vp Modpack and the other modpacks should already have the original files for these maps.

Adding the "load" file only changes the textures to the ones I have included.

*I also added new widescreen "background" screenshots. This can be added to your Missions/campaign/UM folder (be sure to backup and save your old backgrounds).

one background is named wide_Background_VMF-511 ...in order to for it to work just delete the _VMF-511 (backup/save your other background first).

thanks cgagan.

Thu Aug 17, 2017 4:00 pm - Three missions corrected and upload updated.

I just noticed some landing errors in the Miyako missions.  Instead of "landing" I had Gattack  :-[
That is corrected now in V1.1

A possible error found in the Sakishima map Load file...

if you have a problem with the map loading correctly it may be caused by...
"Highcloudsnoise = cloudsnoise003.tga".
Just delete that line and use the HighCloudsNoise = cloudnoise.tga line below it (just delete the ";" in front of it).

Hi
Superb work ! Thank you !
I just play this Campaigne.
I have a little problem with the catapult.
The speed of the ship is not enough to start the plane with weapon load on the catapult.
Perhaps the power of a catapult is not strong enough ?
Regards
Darky

I use DBW 1.71

One thing you could try is to change the armaments in the arming screen before playing the mission.  Choosing a lighter weapons load should allow takeoff.
Check to see if you have the option "Wind & Turbulence" ON (sometimes I fly with that OFF and then forget to change it back).
Thanks for the complements.  :)
