Grand Canyon 2.03
« on: May 21, 2010, 09:23:18 AM »

This is so complete a rework of my old Grand Canyon map as to be completely new.  All new textures and many new airfields.

Old missions should work, but you'll notice waypoints and objects are offset 1.6 kilometers to the southwest. Must have had something to do with that...er...weather balloon that crashed west of here in Area 51.  It's pretty easy to select the lot and move them back to where you want them using FMB+.   Sorry about that but it couldn't be avoided.  I won't bore you with the details.

Lake Meade is set to sea level now, (using a custom elevation curve) and the lake and bottom third of the Colorado River are now properly navigable by ships.

Be mindful of the tourist buses on your strafing runs, the park rangers shit bricks when they have to clean up those messes.  :P

Credits to Avala for a repurposed texture from his Benghalli map, and to Niel Lowe and Gilb57 for woods and forest textures from their Darwin and 4 Season English Channel maps respectively.

Special thanks to Redko, who was kind enough to provide some very helpful constructive criticism which I feel greatly improved the final product.

Have at it:

If you do not run Ultrapack, you may need the following files also.  It includes the necessary woods and forest textures from NTL Darwin and Gilb's 4 Seasons English Channel map.

Here is a small patch which replaces some of the BumpH files, which were causing some strange tiling effects on some of the textures:

and...if you don't have it, you'll need LALRone's hangar mod (this is already included in UP/HSFX)

A humble request from a beggar,

Please, someone, set this map up so it can be used in QMB!

Better yet, point me to instructions for adding new maps to the QMB.

I'll admit that I'm lazy and mostly set up low-altitude QMB missions, and I like to have terrain to dodge around in.

You'll note in the download that I've included a complete set of QMB missions.

Using notepad, add the line:

VKG_Grand_Canyon

to \Quicks\QMBMaps.ini

and Bob's your uncle.

Thanx for this map! I've never tried out your previous version but this one really looks nice.
By the way: if I had to make a ranking of best maps your Crete map would definately be in my top 5.  :)

The only thing I miss in your Grand Canyon map is John Wayne on a horseback...  ;)
