@ Jimbo - is that a working steam traction engine ? If so I have a couple of those [ a car and road roller ] tucked away in their 'original' boxes from the 1970's

Those ships are great and same for the transport vehicles.

Ships, especially sailing ships, are way beyond my patience level.
All that rigging looks great but a real pain to make it so.
Can you post a close up of the trolleys?

You're right on the cost, plastic planes cost too much.

I search ebay for deals and they are there but it is pretty much luck to stumble across them.

The prices there are all over the map, sometimes 20 or 30 dollars price difference for same model.
I try to keep the 1/48 Monogram bombers(B 17, B 24) under $35 mediums around$25 and all others under $20. I just bought 5 AMT/ERTL P40F Warhawks for$50 as a package deal.
No more P40s for me, there are now 9 waiting.

The P38s above are not yet done, I really hate painting canopies.

Old Occre wooden kits from @2005...Scale is 1/16 if I remember and are about 90% wood construction.. They look better from a distance

I recall something I read ages ago from 80,s/90,s last Century.

Airfix, Revell etc were starting to produce their kits using Copper Beryllium moulds to give a higher standard of detail.. i.e engraved panel lines which were difficult to do with tool steel and the spark erosion process. Unfortunately ,I think the use of Copper Beryllium was banned in Europe due to it,s high toxicity.

As I recall, production was then  moved to the Far Eastern countries where I think Health and Safety Standards were lower

Another factor in the cost is that The Copper Beryllium moulds are made using stamping or pressing as the alloy is fairly "soft" compared to Tool Steel.

Being softer, they are not as durable and when the components are out of tolerance , the mould is scrapped, re-melted whatever and a new one made as they are not able to be re-machined. Expensive

So I may have been a bit harsh on the cost of plastic kits...Maybe a manufacturer would like to pitch in???
