Request for a map of Carpathians
« on: June 03, 2017, 11:58:53 AM »

I'd like to make a request for someone to make a map.  I don't think this area has been mapped yet but there were some large battles fought here.  I'm speaking mainly about eastern Hungary and western Romania and the battles fought in late 1944 at Turda, Oradea, Debrecen and Szolnok, and others.

Great idea! Even better if you lower the line a bit to include Ploiesti (Operation Tidle Wave). ;)

I thought about including Ploiesti but figured that target should have a map all for itself which should include much more of the southward area that includes southern Romania and Bulgaria.

Making a smaller map (like the mapped area in the square above) would be easier for a map-maker to build.  I prefer large maps so that more operations could be included "all-in-one."  However, experience has taught me that large maps are more difficult, more time-consuming, and can have less attention to detail (populating with objects).

I do hope some other map-maker could take on this Carpathians project.  Missions could pit Hungarians vs. Romanians, both pre-war and late-ww2 when Romania turned to the Allied side in 1944.  Late-war planes and tanks could also be utilized to re-create the almost unknown battles that took place in this region.

Yup, agreed. More so now that we have the He-112s that Romania used against Hungary in a few short pre-war skirmishes (one of which had a Romanian pilot get the first confirmed air-victory in history for his country). We might need a few Italian planes that the Hungarians used though.

Hi, CzechTexan,
would you be so kind and refresh your pictures in this thread, please?

EDIT:
The easiest way is described by asheshouse here:

see Reply 24 there.

EDIT:
Done  ;) but using Flickr now instead of that screwy Photobucket.  :P

If you'll notice the border area, I chose these red border lines because to the east we already have Bessarabia map, to the north we have Slovakia map, to the southwest we have the Yugoslavia map.  It could maybe be extended more to the west (but not actually include Budapest - not including Budapest would make it easier for the mapbuilder).  I think Budapest (and Ploesti) should have its own map.  Budapest should include the area of south Moravia and southwest Slovakia for operations in those areas during and after the Battle of Budapest.

Hi, CzechTexan,
I tried to work with microdem on the area you proposed,
created pre_map_H.tga, (still without rivers),
now I am working on river net for Mymap_c.tga.
Perhaps we would not duplicate the work, I hope so ,
please write if you have something done.
Best regards,
Ivan

I have nothing done.  I just thought this would be a good area to map by someone else.  Looks like you got a handle on it already!   :D Thanks for taking up the request!

The area covered by the map as proposed by CzechTexan can serve also for the campaigns of WWI:
There was Battle of Transylvania in 1916 , see Wikipedia:
