Thank you WxTech & Barnesy for your work on the Wildcat. It's one of my favorites too. Not graceful, sexy or very powerful, it was tough and got the job done.

Here's a quote from U.S. Navy Fighters of WWII by Barrett Tillman and Robert L. Lawson:

"Whatever its shortcomings, the F4F retained the priceless asset of availability. Whether operating from fleet carriers, ashore at Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, or from escort carriers hunting U-boats, it was there in sufficient strength. Perhaps the ultimate statement on the Wildcat came from no less an authority than Lieutenant Commander James Flatley, skipper of VF-10, who said, 'Let us not be too critical of our equipment. It shoots the enemy down in flames and brings most of us home.' Little more could be demanded of any fighter aircraft."

And it's fun to fly.

Hello WxTech,
Thank you again for your outstanding cockpits. Following Mick's news about the updated Wildcat graphics from Barnsey I downloaded the files and the result is fantastic. A bug has appeared in the F4f-3 cockpit forward views. The smooth contour over the cowling top has been replaced by a upper surface blue coloured horizonal flat shape.  I am still trying to work out how to send pix so please be patient.....All the other model variants are fine. The shape reminds me of the ancient angled forward view corner cowl profiles that were featured in the original game. This is only present in cockpit view. The airframe external are fine. Can you please assist?

Peter,
This odd surface your refer to in the -3, is it *outside* the cockpit? I did no work there, and so far no one else has reported such a glitch. A pic would be useful indeed. You can post an image to a hosting service such as Photobucket, then put the URL inside the HTML image tags.

I still don't know what the problem was and how it was fixed. Was it related to my mod or Barnsey's?

And speaking of Barnsey... I see he has done some smoothing of the curved parts of the canopy framing. I did contemplate doing some such smoothing, although not to the seeming degree of fineness; a simple doubling of polygons would make a big difference.

Now, here's the thing. Aspects of the stock canopy which bother me:

- The framing in some places is too wide. In particular, the intermediate bars at mid sliding canopy, which should be no more than 2/3 their current width. And both the fixed and sliding forward arches (which contact when closed) should be less wide.
- The upper canopy is too low, and hence too squat looking. In reality it cleared the rear bulkhead with a noticeable gap, in the manner of the Hurricane's canopy.
- The transition between the lower straight sides and the upper curve is too abrupt, and occurs a bit too low with respect to the horizontal bars.

So. I'm now contemplating to improve these issues. Which will also require to slightly raise the mirror. Here's my question...

In some pits *both* the internal cockpit *and* the external model elements of the canopy appear in the reflected image from the mirror. If I alter the canopy as proposed, will this reveal itself as displaced internal/external framing in the Wildcat? (I really hate it when both these things appear simultaneously, offset with respect to each other, and usually horribly crude where the external parts are concerned.)
