I also know that a couple of them were well camoed and secret airfields as the Dutch had around 12 or so secret airfields throughout the Dutch East Indies

US pilots reported that the KNIL were masters of camouflaging their airfields, to the point that the Japanese never discovered some of them until they overran them. I'm not sure how you'd handle that in IL2, though.

I've read that the Dutch had locals dig slit trenches across the runways and the Dutch rigged a foliage spring flatten spring back up right system when a plane landed.
Foliage would be at ground level upon landing spring back upright to look like trees.
That is all I have been able to find.

Possible use of transparent runways over a well camoed setting.

There was a refinery at Tjepoe, something that the Japanese also wanted. Bear in mind that place names may have changed since 1941- Gresik was Grissee for instance, Tjepoe is now spelt Tjepu or Cepu. The same applies to volcanoes, with Semeru being spelt Smeroe then.

Every time I google Java Oil Fields W.W.2 I get a lot of cool images and great info  :D

This photo is very different. Something that you don't see too often considering the Dutch had a Scorched Earth Policy before the Japanese invasion of the Dutch East Indies.

This oil field definitely missed out or did not have enough time to make the Scorched Earth Policy happen.

Cheers

Having a 5 nights and 3 day short break to Laos for a new marriage visa.

Laos sandwiches are very yummy and scrumptious with French baguettes

Most of the Java railway lines were twin track, but the line from Tjilatjap to the Bandoeng-Djokjakarta main line was only a single track. Recognising that the ports of Batavia and Soerabaja could be threatened by air raids the authorities expanded Tjilatjap's port facilities, but did not doube the railway line. This caused considerable problems when Tjilatjap did, in fact, become vital to the defence of Java.
Although Tjilatjap is not on your map, I thought I'd mention it as a matter of interest.

Oh, and if I may make a request: could you add sugar factory "de Maas" at Besoeki (now Besuki) to your map? You can find its remains on Google Earth!

Since coming back from a trip to Laos things have been progressing.

Textures

Country and Mount textures have been finalized  ;D
Midland and Lowland textures I am still working on as base textures

Rivers and Beaches

I have put all of the rivers in Central and Eastern Java Bali and South Sulawasi so far on map_c

This week I started the map_h rivers process.  ;D :D

I used an rgb gradient from rgb 0,3,5,8 and 10 followed by a gaussian Blur.  :D

This is the result  :D ;)
Bali

South Sulawesi

Beaches

all with a gentle raised gradient

Completing map_h work for Java.
Completing more beaches

After all that then I can start laying down some infrastucture like roads rail and bridges etc.

25 more rivers to go  and a full gaussian blur ;D :D

I use pink for a clear definition of the rivers

I have also increased the river gradient using rgb 10,13 and 15 with some rivers

Kirby, why do you make so many rivers? They would not be seen in real life, as they would be narrow and overgrown with jungle. If you omit the rivers, you solve the problem of them showing up as sea blue instead of brown.

If you are going to do them, I have a way of making them only 2 pixels wide.

Hi Mandril,

I've mostly painted the rivers 2 pixels wide with occasional widened with areas 3 pixels all by hand.

The oceans/rivers water thing is always a problem for mappers.

Some of them can be easily covered with wood  ;D

Let me know what your 2 pixels technique is so I can try it on the second stage of the map Lombok area etc.

Java's almost finished.  ;D

Before I really hated map_h rivers work now using a number of ways I really enjoy it.  :D ;)

Cheers
