Don't worry Mick, the texture is loaded once and further objects reusing the same texture are using a reference to the existing one.
This by the way is the reason for log error lines like "Unexpected txr reload (...)":
Since IL2 thinks in terms of materials, and materials have additional properties (besides others, Texture Flags for OpenGL), it can happen that the same texture file gets referenced by more than one material file.
In that case, when subsequent mat files differ from the first loaded one in terms of OpenGL texture flags being used, the game will complain about this with the above mentioned log line and use the initial flags (the ones from the first mat file with this texture being loaded) instead.
This can have funny results.
Funny since they're more or less random, they only depend on the load order of mat files, so for instance a part of an aircraft might look different if another aircraft using the same texture with different flags is being loaded first.

Best regards - Mike

Many THX for the comprehensive explanation, Mike, so these tga files will remain in their 1024 size, at least in my game ...  :P

Again many THX, Max, for this final enhancement ...!  :P

Like you, I am very interested in visual improvements to our beloved sim, that was designed, let's not forget it, way back in the ancient times (2000 and even before ...!)  ;)

I have one question though, for this game's gurus ... :-X

Since several tga files are 4 Mb (1024x1024), does the game load, for ex Cobertes_Rodes1.tga, once and only once, whatever the number of planes in a mission that use part of it, or does the game need to load Cobertes1 as many times as any plane in the mission, uses part of it ...?  o_O

If the answer is N°2, then may be those 4Mb files should be downsized to 512x512 (... only 769 ko ...!) for ex ...?  8)

That is a good question and which I will give you my thoughts on it.

I personally use in my game the Carmaster HD-Mod for using 2048x2048 skins (or even bigger skins), my game does not show any problems, but
when I start using ALOT of airplanes in the sky and use a huge map which is completely filled with objects and huge cities and villages, my game
starts to slow down. - It is not a computer problem, or memory-RAM problem, or graphics-card problem. I have a very good system that can
handle alot on it. I have used other games with have much more stuff in them.
The problem here is, it is just the way this game program was made, and how it works.

So for many years now (11+ years now  :P ) I have been painting most of my game skins in a size of 1024x1024 for airplane-skins and
making the other default skins in 512x512 and some in 1024x1024 in size.
Many of the original game skins were made in a size of 256x256 , but this just "kills" the visuals and the nice details on the entire game.
Do you still remember how the original game looks like ?  ;D
The pilots look bad, the airplane parts look a little bad, the maps look bad, and so many other things look bad if they use skins in a size 256x256.
But I saw a great potential to this game and it could look better.

So I started making for my personal game new textures and painted the old skins to be bigger, in a size of 512x512 and some in 1024x1024.
To include in them more details and colors.
My game can now look its best and I can use a sky full of aircraft doing dogfights , and use them in a map that is full of objects and huge cities.
I don't notice any slowing down or FPS problems.

So my answer to your question is, these skins will not effect your game, as long as they are kept in a "modest size" which the
game can handle them . Skins which are not too big and not too small either. Everything works much better and running smooth as it should.

But I have also created bigger skin-templates and bigger skins (2048x2048) for myself and some times I do use them with great pleasure and
look at the fine little details on an aircraft. It is great eye-candy, but when using these large skins, on a newer 3d-model with bigger details,
I never use too many airplanes at one time on a huge map. Just a few. Because the game starts slowing down.

So for an overall good working game, with LOTS of airplanes and goodies in it, I like to keep my skins to a modest size of 1024x1024.
This is my personal game and my choice.
Everyone can do whatever they wish with their personal game. That is why we call it "Modding a game".

I wrote this because i noticed there is alpha channel on these textures.Except engine texture wich has some parts cut with alfa wheels doesnt so they could be saved as a 8 bit to make size of the files smaller.Difference between 32/24 bit and 8 bit texture is not visible in game so you can see alt those excelent details but it would have impact on the performances, need less memory so its safe for older PCs.For comparsion: 1024 size texture + alpha=4MB, 24bit=3MB, 8bit=1MB.

You can reduce their size (to 24 bits or less) and re-paint them if you wish, it is no problem with me.
I am using this size and saved them in 32 bits and I do not notice any problems with my game, even with
alot of airplanes flying.

Some skins already had an alpha channel on the original skin wish I have painted, but its blank (nothing there), so I have
no idea why, if these were to be later cut for some other special mod (?)
So I let them be as they were.
Might come in handy for a modder doing stuff on their airplanes. It is very easy to create
a new alpha channel  using photoshop - just click one button. But maybe some people are using some other program and
do not know how to do it.

I have noticed from doing skin textures on the static-objects that many of them contained the original
alpha-channels on them too, hundreds of skins, but they are just "blank". Which means they are not being used or "cut".
Why did the original creators of the game left them there, I don´t know ?

Does an empty alpha channel which isnt enabled via mat file take up any memory? I dont know if 32bit vs 24bit does matter or not. Its best to save in 24 bit if no alpha channel is needed. 8bit is just 256 color where you need to reconvert again if you make any changes so I dont recommend it except with navmap files which can be fairly large.
