Dear IL2 fans,
for your enjoyment, another little bit of the S.Pacific.
"Lord Howe Island, or: texturing in the vertical plane"    [ver1.0]

get it at:  https://www.mediafire.com/?447rya18e6cvic8

to run:
a) copy folder "_Tex" and folder "Lord_Howe_Island" into your MAPS folder.
b) place this line in your all.ini  file:
                Lord_Howe_Island    Lord_Howe_Island/load.ini

Apologies :- this island has no military history to speak of.
But very beautiful, nonetheless.   See Read Me included.
Technical notes:
1) this map built on a lap-top  running modded Il2 in the 4.09 Version only
[with SAS Modact 2.3].
So:  this map has not been tested on any other version of Il2 .
2) all non-stock map textures are 1024x1024, and are all included here, some with bump files.
3)  some of these non-stock textures were also used in my Gilf-Kebir map.
They were greatly improved for that map by 242Sqn_CAT. His assistance there is acknowledged.
4) New textures were made with GIMP ver2.6 and IL2 Map Maker ver 4.09 [links via
http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,33463.0.html]
5) thanks to Natalie Tapson for the Ball's Pyramid photo, available via
https://www.flickr.com/photos/40325561@N04/albums/72157629994745925
6) the usual caveats apply:
This map is made available for non-commercial & non-profit use only.
Neither this map nor any of its components can be sold, hired, or in any way used to generate any monetary return of
any nature. Any reference to this map or its components must include due acknowledgment of its author,
plus any other contributors to its construction, including those mentioned above.

Thanks to the Il2 modding community for making this fabulous flight sim live on - still !!

Happy boating!

What a very nice map. Nice textures and something different in the way of colors, especially the dark cliffs.

But may I make a suggestion? The mountains seem a bit steep and high in relation to the size of the island. Why not lower them which is easily done by darkening the RGB values of the terrain?

I did that with a few clicks and the mountains look better proportioned. I also used the Jungle.tga files for the woods ...

Hi, Agracier.
glad you like this little map.
regarding your comment:"The mountains seem a bit steep and high in relation to the size of the island"
yes -they do seem that way. But, that is in fact their REAL proportion, for width to height!!  If anything, the real cliffs are even steeper than I've shown them. Lord Howe Island  is a very weird place indeed!
It certainly stretches the abilities of Il2 , to make such a topography look convincing. And, I admit, I havent really succeeded. But I sure had fun trying!  And I felt that Lord Howe deserves to be presented in all its spectacular strangeness-well, as much as possible, given our old game engine.
For the nearby volcanic stack [Ball's Pyramid], these problems are even worse. In that case, I did compromise by reducing the height a bit-but the result is still not ideal.
if you like this map, I recommend the much bigger "Tasman Sea" map-which includes this island, plus others. That larger map is 1.6:1 scale overall, but the offshore islands [including Lord Howe] are retained at 1:1 ! - so, it's a hybrid scale map. Great fun to make!

Is there any stand-alone install? Because trying to install BAT seems to be an exercise in futility for me. Downloads seem to contain corrupted files, or something that causes the install to abort.

I've tried d/l about 3 different times and installing as well and each time it's nada, as soon as Checkpoint Charlie tries to install.

So, a stand-alone install would be great.

I was also wondering if you would still have the file from which you made map_t? I would suppose it is a layered file?

I ask because I'd like to remove the game roads and place road objects for myself. The zig-zags on game generated roads, so unsightly. And such a small map as this, placing road objects is a small amount of work.

Btw: your map is very enjoyable and fun to use. Nice landscapes and textures.
