New 3D Propeller models
« on: June 07, 2015, 12:52:53 AM »

Hello dudes,

I'm a propeller specialist and enthusiast, and just love modeling 3D propeller for various simulator addons ( most X-Plane and IL2 for now ). I did only a couple of props for IL2 ( F4U Corsair three bladed, B-17/B-24/C-47 ) but, if you are interested in prop for a particular airplane in IL2, please submit your wishes here, I may take a look at it.

I have limited available time but when I can I would love giving my tiny contribution to this great family of IL2 fans you are, as this sim, decades later, is still getting interesting and I'm sure we'll never get tired of it, thanks to the very active modders community.

Choices available on this poll are just to fill the poll options, I can do virtually any prop, from the simples two bladed fixed pitch wooden propeller up to the dual acting, fully reversible and featherable modern turboprop propellers. Of course, here the polycount is very limited, so I can't reach the level of detail I would like but, that's no prob as it still as to match the overall model detail level.

I don't have current screens or so of my props on this sim so feel free to take a look at this thread : https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,25142.1860.html

Also I would like to thank Ton and Jeronimo, as without them, none of my work could ever come to the IL2 skies : they texture, animate and mount the model on the actual airplanes.

Cheers,
Hueyman

From my personal point of view, what is badly required in IL-2 is a 3D model of airscrew having thickness and shape while rotating.

I can't live without Ton's "screenshot propeller" visual mod, which adds much to the realism for me, but it, as well as all of these animation models, falls short when viewed from the side.

Just my thoughts.

Hi Hueyman, many thanks for sharing your work!  :)

I moved the topic to the proper section
and edited the header a little bit.
Hope this is OK?  ;)

... unfortunately, screenshot prop mods are made for ... screenshots ...!  :-[

... that is, they give what you see in films and videos that are shot at much more than 50 images/second (human eye capability), that's what gives them that stroboscopic special effect that has nothing to do with reality (human eyes) ...  :(

Other than that I agree that most props viewed from the side are pathetic, to say the least ...  :D

JapanCat made an attempt 5 years ago:

https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,12269.0.html

... and above all, thewoz released a comprehensive and more convincing prop mod that gives more justice to spinning props seen from the side, here:

Thanks for introducing yourself here, much apreciated your work.
I love them, these are incredible Hamiltons, mouth keeps dripping  :\'(
I would love to see a new Buffalo Prop i.e., maybe could be coupled
with Jero's achieved cowling Fix. The Avengers cry for sth. or that unlucky Wildcat Props.
I could at least make out hubbed and unhubbed variants, none of the real
matching ours. That there are differences I tried to show with my Martlet Fix, but I lack
3-D abillity, so my job is no more that a standin/pointing to that these props
ain't proper. https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,42639.0.html
Avenger
Buffalo
Wildcats
that's what comes to my mind if I have a choice,
but an overhaul, whenever you think is necessary is allover supported here.
TKind Regards
Tobias

Hi hueyman, love the work you have done so far. Can we have all of these props, or is that to greedy?

Hi Hueyman!

Very interesting introduction!

Sorry but I can't vote....because I can't vote for all!

So add one vote each at the end of the poll for me!

Hey Hueyman! I`ve had your prop for hellcat for a year now, amazing work, thank you! I would agree with some guys here, what is needed the most is thickness in props while rotating. It was started here.... https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,40589.0.html

It would be amazing if that mod could be combined with Jeronimo`s and your work. For example:

Left is your mod, rights is mod by the_woz. His work is based on stock props. The combination of the two would be awsome! The best of both worlds!

Hi all,

Thanks for all your compliments, that's always nice to hear and motivating ;-)

@ Gerax : No problem, I didn't really know where to post it ^^

@henkypenky : You're welcome !

@ Mick & BOYAN : Guys, I just couldn't agree more with you, really. I'm well aware of this nonsense but honestly I don't have the knowledge in IL2 code as well as textures and image editing softwares to do something regarding this. I saw both mods you mentioned above and think they do the job quite well ( even though I didn't test them yet ), according to screenshots.

From my point of view, the perfect prop mod would be :

- New and detailed static prop 3D models, as well as damaged ones
- Prop full animation, not only spinning, but blade pitch change animation modeled ( feathering... especially unfeathering )
- True 3D stroboscopic prop disc with thickness in side view.

This last item is probably the hardest to do, as it's not only a 2D image file we would display when looking at the plane from side view, but a progressive 3D model which should play with colors tones and contrast to also give the illusion of the blade pitch.

First, when we look at a fast spinning object as an airplane propeller spinning usually between 2000/3000 RPM, we don't see blurred blades like on the screenshot prop mod, that's for movie, we actually see prop DISCS, like this :

Then, for improved realism, we should find a way to alter the prop disc color tones and contrasts between top and bottom parts ( or left and right depending from the Point of View - PoV ) : Lets compare the prop to what it really is, an airscrew. Its blades got pitch which, when watched from a determined PoV, don't look the same at all obviously. One blade will look thin and twisted ( so you're looking toward its leading edge ), while the other ( considering a two bladed prop ) is looking flat as we're looking at its upper surface " extrados "

This effect was modeled on several sims/addons but very few succeed to reach the desired effect. I took one of the models that, IMHO, succeed the most in this, the Majestic Dash 8 Q400 for FSX, and added 2 quick made blade to show you what I meant regarding blade pitch its effects on the colours/contrast on the prop disc

So, I really hope that someone here, probably the_woz who must know how it works in IL2, would agree looking further into it. I would be glad to furnish him/her side views of each blades at different prop pitch settings to have a base to work on, as side view is only realistic if it follows the shape of the blade when looked from side ( very characteristic shape, due to the blade twist, going from thick at blade root and getting thinner and thinner when reaching blade tip )

@Knochenlutscher : Ok ! Will see what I can do !

Cheers,
Hueyman

Combine the mods of Hueyman and The Woz would not be very complicated, if both are agree, of course.

Beautiful and very creative artwork on those fine props. Congratulations, I really like them.
It is an aviation fan dream come true! The IL2-1946 aircraft will definitely look much nicer with
these fine upgrades to them.

Cheers
