Dakar map issue - map editing with CUP
« on: April 12, 2015, 07:54:33 AM »

Hi guys,

I've found an old Dakar campaign on Mission4Today which plays quite OK in CUP (it has mostly default IL2 objects/planes). However, while playing it, I've noticed an issue with the Dakar airport in the Dakar map provided with CUP.
Around the Dakar airport, there are many airstrip objects which I don't see the purpose for. When playing with AI, it will sometimes use one of these "airstrips" to land and will crash in the buildings around the base. There are 2 proper airstrips on that airport and they do have airstrip markers. However, the AI will not always use these. Here's what I'm talking about:

I've looked into map editing (never did any map editing). I've managed to start the FMB_unlocked editor with CUP and I got my way around it. I know how to delete these objects. However, when it comes to saving the map with all the objects attached to it, I'm missing files (so do I think). After "saving as..." my edited map, I just get that:

Can we edit the default maps in CUP? Or is that impossible because of the way they're built-into the pack?

I don't want to do complicated things like re-texturing, etc. Just move a couple of objects/markers around.

Thanks in advance for your answers/help.

Cheers,

Paul

Hi,

yes, it is possible, but You must use unlocked FMB and save corrected maps in folder Mapmods.

Hi ls,

Thanks for your answer.

I've already followed your tips in the main CUP topic to get FMB_unlocked to work.  ;) I got that step right and it is working.

However, could you elaborate on the "save corrected maps in folder Mapmods" part?
Let 's say I edit the Dakar map and want to save it as Dakar_corrected. Where exactly should I save it inside my main IL2 folder? Could you write down where you save your edited maps in yours?

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Paul

---EDIT---

I finally got it to work and I was able to edit that map. It has few to do with CUP and it is basically about getting the principles of map editing right. When it comes to CUP and FMB_unlocked, you have to follow the instructions from ls here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,44975.msg504481.html#msg504481
You also have to follow the basic rules for unlocking FMB of course.

Once you got it to work and in order to do basic map editing, they key points are:
  • Create a "/maps/map_name" folder in your IL2 install main folder
  • When you want to save in FMB_unlocked, use the "Save" option. "Save as" does not work as intended (and you cannot rename a map easily, like that...)
  • Copy the files automatically saved in your "/maps/map_name" folder to your "#WAW/MAPMODS/MAPS/map_name" folder (#WAW or any other CUP module folder)

If you follow those key points, basic map editing works perfectly fine in CUP.

Thanks to ls for pointing us in the right direction for getting FMB_unlocked to work with CUP.

Brilliant post, thank you, I was looking exactly for that, in CUP and only light modifcations to airfield layouts !

I put that on hold until I either:
  • Manage to get FMB Unlocked to work with CUP
  • Or somebody provides me with all the Dakar map files so I can edit it in another IL2 mod environment.

And here is the (little) fix for the Dakar map:

ag_Dakar.7z

Thanks a lot to Zoran who made a great JGSME mod for unlocking the FMB.
