Yes that's the plan.

However I want to model it on real world training courses. What you had to do in WWI was very different than WWII, was very different to Korea, was very different to Vietnam........

I remember Straight from the Farm. That is a true classic. I learned a lot from that campaign.

However I want to model it on real world training courses. What you had to do in WWI was very different than WWII, was very different to Korea, was very different to Vietnam........

How much detail do you want on this?

Serious realism would require many different modules to teach players various piloting and weapons skills, as well as the quirks of flying different types of aircraft (fighter, twin-engine, multi-engine, WWI-era aircraft, WW2-era aircraft, etc.).

If you're really sweating historical realism, you'd also need to limit pilot training by air force and year. For example, a pre-war graduate of a German or Japanese military pilot training program got lavish training with about 200 flying hours. Additionally, graduates of these programs were instrument- and aerobatics-rated, knew the basics of aerial navigation and air-to-air gunnery, and had about 10-20 hours flying "in type." But, by mid 1944, the same pilot might be lucky to get 20 total flight hours - mostly in trainers - with only the rudiments of IFR, gunnery, and navigation training. Things were just about as bad for most WW I pilots.

If anything, minimal training seems most appropriate for a game, since most players will just choose whatever aircraft looks coolest and learn by trial and error.

I want multiple modes in the game.

In some modes you will be able to just pick a plane and jump into the cockpit.

In others you will be required to complete a set of tasks before you are allowed into combat.

I will also have a "realism" setting that means the number of training missions you are required to complete can be adjusted as the player requires.

If they reduce the number of training missions, they will still be given their wings, but it will be a different image than a player that has completed all of them. So at a glance players can see what their opponents have done.

I think Sniperton is describing an API in reply #5.... An API for modders. I applaud the spirit in which this flight sim is being developed. Thank you.

This ALL sounds fantastico !, pre Il2 training with Joint Ops, style would be good. you need to be able to taxi, take off, fly circuit/s and land. know your calls and positioning. then progress to flying as a group, (which you can do anyway with the first part ), with intrusions by hostile set to attack your group leader who is parked up near the runway/taxi way somewhere, this has to be spotted, identified as a hostile, then dealt with appropriately. with the aim to protecting the leader while getting rid of the intruder. This could also extend to escorting a ww2 era type civilian aircraft, which may  or may not get attacked. one could choose military or civilian aircraft, within I would hope a MSF - CFS - type of world environment, and as in MSFS & CFS - open a new window for rear view and map view. As one of the goodly aspects of CFS is the ability to add many resizable windows onto your screen. I would also suggest starting off as in real world, planes like the tiger moth etc.
just my 2 bobs worth, and I am very keen to keep an eye on this adventure.
way cool.
thanks
