Skinning - Quick and Dirty for absolute beginners

I wanna paint my Sturmovik!
1 - get the template.zip for the sturmovik, from jason's post.
2- get GIMP, or any other of the Popular Graphics Manipulation programs (Adobe Photoshop CS2 is so outdated they don't mind you having it for free)
3 - open the Zip, and find the PSD file in there.
4 - open the PSD file with your Graphics program.
5 - understand that the PSD file is like a big set of transparent sheets of plastic stacked like a tower. You look at the sheets from above.
On each sheet is one subject, like rivets, Panel lines, Stars and stripes, dirt and dust.
You can paint on each sheet individually.
You can turn them on or off for better viewing or to hide them.

6 - find the Sheet that's called "your paint here". Take a Brush and get painting. Or put some stickers on there like for Formula one cars. Your mind is the limit.
7 - Save the PSD file to someplace safe
8 - find a DDS plugin for your particular program (Nvidia DDS plugin for Photoshop is what i use) Install that Plugin.
9 - open the template again. do a "save as" -> DDS file (i chose DXT5 ) and give it a descrptive name "hellokitty_G2.dds"
10 - put the dds file in the game/data/graphics/skins/nameoftheplane/ Folder.
11 - check the result in the skin viewer.
12 - screens or it didn't happen!

:P

It's just for those totally lost, tried to get to the point fast and quick to lift the veil of Fog that hovers over the subject.
No other ambition than that.
 :)

I took my bite to play around.
Thanks for the Schaer

I see absolutely no reason to DL these, they aren't allowed to use online. I really care less for skins, as long as they are white

These Skins weigh some 4 to 4.1 MB.
Down the road, we will (have to) push the devteam to take the plunge and change that, for about a hundred reasons.
Online Skin synch already exists, so even including a hundred skins per aircraft via official patch is technically possible.
Or do the old thing - live transfer during flight.

Two things are at stake: Planes with Penises and Swastika, and Planes with tampered Alpha channels.
The former was never an issue, and the latter can be controlled by applying a plane-type default alpha mask during online sessions.

But i gather that today is not yet the time to press into that direction. When 5000 and more accurate, fun and squadron skins are available, the subject will have the weight and leverage it needs in order to get a change rolling.

But down the road, this is an absolute Must.
Skins available only on "unranked" servers, and only if installed by users... not good enough.

In COD you cannot have these skins, to much lag on the server.

yea was it not already a concern for 1946... some say yes, some say no...
if it were me, they would be in official patches. Free content made by users...
checked my the MD5 checksum so you can rename them as you see fit? or simply kick them out...

But besides that - i think skinning is one of the major elements of the Game besides the FMB and hosting a Server.

BoS lacks in content, lacks tools. Painting a Plane  is one of the main venues for the Pilots to be creative, to be engaged, co create content.
It is also the easiest, from my PoV.
It gives us something to DO, between patches, between repeating the online missions, between... Campaign Missions.
Some Pilots customize their helmets. Virtual Pilots customize their Planes, they love doing that sort of stuff.
It keeps us active and in the Paintshop, not nagging on the Forums.

Me too.

Nice! I've had the game a while, but haven't found it fun to play yet... figured I'd let it sit a while and "bake" and see when its done.
