Help with stopping drive by downloads
« on: November 26, 2014, 02:17:23 PM »

Hey all,

I'm not sure if this is the right board so forgive me. I need help with removing whatever is responsible for trying to attack my computer.
This is my situation:
Oftentimes when I start up Firefox I see a little animation flash across the screen, indicating that something has downloaded. But I haven't done anything! When I check my downloads queue, I see that a program "marine2.exe" has failed to download. I have checked the download link to trace it:
Code: [Select]
http://dl5.iq11download.com/lm/lmdisc2/marine2.exe
I don't know what to make of this. I have Norton, Malwarebytes, and Spybot, and ran full scans with all of them, but nothing turns up. Please help me get to the source of this problem because it's kind of distressing to me. Thank you!

it is spyware do a search on it and around the 5th one down will tell you how to check to see if it is on your computer and how to get rid of it.
When you do the search for it use startpage as your search engine.

Run Malwarebytes in safe mode, and make sure to max the settings to do the most intense scan. It could (should) take many hours to run.

Thanks again to everyone for the good advice! I figured out that it was Firefox that was abusing me, it was trying to restart whatever download that my antivirus had shut down to begin with. Since there are no settings to turn that feature off, I uninstalled Firefox and used my brute force caveman intellect to delete whatever files were left. Now the problem is gone and my pc is clean! Sometimes Firefox is spyware heehee  :)
Also malwarebytes and hijackthis are very good tools, if nothing else they can teach someone a little about their computer.
