Northeastern Brazil - Natal to Fernando de Noronha
« on: September 16, 2014, 05:48:48 PM »

After a request of Brazilian members here at SAS, I decided to begin this project. This will be a 1:1 scale map of Natal, eastern Rio Grande do Norte state and Fernando de Noronha archipelago. My intention at start is to fill a gap with Brazilian community at SAS and Il-2 world in general, who dreams with something like this since the start of Il2 modding days, I believe.

At the begining, I will release an Alpha version with a basic map for sub-hunting operations or what if campaigns for Plan Rubber (the USA plan to invade Brazilian coast if Getúlio Vargas joined the Axis), as I have little knowledge about the area. But with time and more information this can be upgraded to a more accurate historical versions. I will be very grateful if some dude living in Natal or with some knowledge source can contribute with this project. And if someone want to make any modification to suit this map better to the era, feel free to do it.

This is the area covered. It lies between 3.50º S 36.5º W to 6.50º S 32º W:

This is a list of the procedures done and to do until release version:

1. Grab and processing elevation data - Done
2. map_c (rivers and shoreline) - Done
3. map_h (coast aligned) - Done
4. load.ini (textures) - Done
5. map_t (texturize land) - Done
6. map_t (city/village tiles) - Done
7. map _t (roads and railways) - Done
8. Actors (autopop) - Done
9. Actors (landmarks, stations, harbours and some stuff that need to be manual) -  In Progress
10. Actors (Airfields) - In Progress
11. ed_map** and map_f - Done
12. load.ini (worldpos and final stuff) - To do

A foto acima mostra a área coberta.

1. Coletar e processar dados de elevação (MDT) - Feito
2. map_c (rios e costa) - Feito
3. map_h (alinhar à costa) - Feito
4. load.ini (texturas) - Em andamento
5. map_t (texturizar o terreno) - Feito
6. map_t (definir onde ficarão as cidades/vilarejos) - Feito
7. map _t (estradas e ferrovias) - Feito
8. Actors (autopovoar) - Feito
10. Actors (Pistas de pouso/bases aéreas) - Em andamento
11. ed_map** and map_f - Feito
12. load.ini (dados de posição -temperatura, latitude, etc e retoques finais) - Para fazer

Mr map explosion aka master xx again! Impressive mate!

Just took 5 hours to 6 only to assign selected textures as a basic load.ini test lol (for the other map aka the high desert ;D ). Map making is tedious hehe.
I'm sure this WIP will be a very interisting area again on the tropical front. :D :)

SAS~Tom2, sometime ago I wanted to make these tropical maps in Brazil. The problem is that I have few spare time to learn about modding, and map making, as you say, is a easy but very tedious task.

But in the last year, two things bring this maps to be possible: I've learned to make them more systematically, as a piece of cake. Some of this knowledge I bring with the community, as this post where you helped me a lot: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,36153.0.html

The second thing: I have advanced in my geomatic engineering degree, and with the new techniques learned in the university I can bring more quality to my work. I've tested some landsat images for make map_t for instance.

I've dedicated some time learning how to make the things, and made some testbeds. Tropical maps are  awesome, and Northeast Brazil a stunning place to map. Some results:

An artificial lake in the middle of sugarcane plantation

A very typical northeast country village landscape. I can imagine some São João (St. John) festivities in these streets in june, with several corn-made typical dishes such as pamonha and canjica, some bonfires lit in the streets, and musicians playing the forró pé-de-serra...

Salt ponds, a very common sight in some places of Northeastern coast such as Macau and Mossoró:

Finalizado o map_c, agora falta texturizar (map_c finished, to texturize now).
