Dogfight - P40 Warhawk vs Ki-43 'Oscar'
« on: January 20, 2014, 12:12:33 PM »

The Classic Dogfight of the 23 FG in China (popularly known as the Flying Tigers after the 1st AVG which was absorbed into the 23rd after America entered the War) - the P-40 Warhawk vs the
Ki-43 'Oscar' or Hayabusa.

And here is the link for the original thread with screen shots:

Please note: 'Lean' versions of this mission pack are included in this download for players who experience FPS issues. At the moment this pack has only been tested in DBW 7.1 as the Hankow map does not come as stock with any other mod.

The map is available here:

But if you decide to try it in a different mod it is at your own risk.

The Situation:

The Classic Dogfight of the 23 FG in China (popularly known as the Flying Tigers after the 1st AVG which was absorbed into the 23rd after America entered the War) - the P-40 Warhawk vs the
Ki-43 'Oscar' or Hayabusa. You will find yourself in the skies over central China on July 15, 1944. The 23rd FG enjoyed air superiority over central China eventhough they ended up 'behind enemy lines' after the Ichi-go offensive effectively cut China in two. This being so, you will find no front markers in these missions.

The weather is morning haze over the Yangtze River with clouds at 3000 meters and light breezes.

This is a typical fighter-bomber mission for the P-40 with the Ki-43 on the defensive.A surprise attack on an airfield has been planned after having taken off from base at sunrise. The P-40s should be attacking from out of the rising sun. The players flight will bomb the barracks on the North side of the airfield while the top cover will be attacking the flak positions near the railway bridge. On the way home there may be various targets of opportunity.

The 'Oscars' are escorting three 'Tojos' to the base under attack, defending them is a mission priority for the Ki-43 missions.

The Missions:

All of the missions start at the same time and on the same day - three in the Warhawk and three in the Hayabusa. The missions are numbered Version 1, 2 and 3 but this is not a measure of difficulty. Nor is the title an indication of what may happen in the mission. In an effort to reflect the fog of war each mission is laid out slightly differently with different advantages to either side.

Success should be possible if you aim to meet your mission objectives but not easy.

Mission Complete for all missions require you shoot down one opposing fighter and land back at your base. There are Secondary and Hidden targets.

This is the third of a series of five mission packs based on the book 'Dogfight - The Greatest Air Duels of World War II' edited by Tony Holmes. Each 'chapter' features a pair of fighters; Spitfire IIA vs Bf 109E, P-47 Thunderbolt vs Bf 109G/K, P-40 Warhawk vs Ki-43 "Oscar" (this mission pack), P-51 Mustang vs Fw 190 and Seafire vs A6M Zero. The book discusses the advantagesand disadvantages of each aircraft, the strategic situation in which they fought and the tactics used by the pilots on each side in an effort to succeed.

I have tried to reflect this in the missions so if the player uses the best tactics for the fighter he is in he should be able to complete the missions successfully.

To install:
Unpack the Mission folder to your DBW 1.71 folder and everything should go where it should.

There are no extra mods or skins needed.
