I have sent you an email to see if you would like my help with your maps.

I'd like to thank those who.have emailed for their interest in our ongoing project. I have to ask those who have modding experience, why is IL2:1946 so popular and CloD not getting the love from the modding community?

As far as I can tell the lack of tools was or is the challenge and Team Fusion has built their own, but why have other modding communities such as SAS not been keen to try and make their own?

As far as the core.dll being 'cracked' this hasn't yet happened but work has made inroads into this...knowledge of machine code would seem to be the skillset required. Always looking for talent in these areas.

If I can ask the SAS guys who mod, what would do you think is required to garner interest from groups such as yours?

Thanks to everyone so-far for your encouraging feedback.

Cheers, MP

Well basiclly, in IMHO, CoD was very buggy and unstable, as for IL-2 has  a sturdy back. Il-2 has a pletora of theaters and planes that make it more apealing to me at leats. The other CoD killer is the steep hardware requirements. The fact that its creators have abonadon it, doesn´t help either. The feeling being that if teh creators of teh sim have ost all faith on it, how cn modders make it work as it was intended? Form me the introduction of Jets to Il-2 has kep my interest in the sim, being the onlly acurate sim for 50´s planes and theratwers  right now.

To begin with CoD is covered in a certain amount of mud from it's disasterous release and this gives reason for caution, as somebody who enjoys texturing and populating maps to a high level of realism i've decided to join forces and team up with my wife Helen to work on maps together but first she has projects of her own to finish. When she's done and released her work we will then consider which direction to take, either continue mapping 46 or move over to CoD but not both so on a personal note i guess as map modders we are sitting on the fence and waiting to see what the future is for both sims before offering our time.

As regards the future of modding CoD RL time is limited and being part of a team often requires hitting deadlines for completion where as modding 46 all of the tools are readily available to the public and modders are free to work on their own projects at their own more relaxed pace, this is how myself and Helen prefer to work and joining / working for or being contracted by teams is not how we would approach our hobby and this will play a huge part in our decision of direction.

Most modders work freelance, do their own stuff or help each other out at their free will so i think that once guys have some tools to play with then maybe they'll become more adventurous.

Max, to be fair to CloD one must remember that IL2:46 started out as one theatre as well, i.e. the Eastern Front. AEP and PF increased the number of theatres, later the modders started making the huge number of maps that are now available. This took years. 1C was already working on the Battle of Moscow until The Suits decided to pull the plug, and Oleg was keen to do the Med. So who knows what 1C might have released had work continued.
Personally I'd like to start work on a proper Singapore map- PF's Singapore map is rather disappointing to say the least. And several RAF aircraft already exist which can be used in this theatre- Benheims, Tiger Moth, the WIP Hurricane IIB for instance. This would of course be a long-term project as all the IJAAF and IJN aircraft would have to be made from scratch, plus Buffalo in RAF and ML versions, Glenn Martins etc.

Please dont get me wrong mate, i'm not knocking it, after all almost everyone of us has had a gripe about the game engine limitations of IL-2 46 and yet here seems to be the perfect answer...an IL-2 sim with a magnificent game engine that has been abandoned by it's owners so to speak and what TF has done so far is absolutely superb.
I was speaking personaly for myself and Helen, we both have jobs in life with pressures and we retexture maps as a source of pleasure and relaxation, the last thing we want in a hobby is pressures to produce, that would take the fun out of it completely! Given all the appropriate tools and free range then i would happily attempt a map of my choosing to my own standards in my own time to release or not release on a public forum but given terms, conditions, deadlines and quality control......well i get all of that at work already.

Max, the same applies to most if not all TF members. The key difference between TF and 1C is that TF's deadlines are far more flexible than 1C's as there is no commercial pressure. So if TF's next release is a few months late it doesn't really matter as there is no potential lost revenue. Same applies to IL2:46's TD, though one might argue that the work of both TF and TD may well result in some new sales for both IL2:46 and CloD, particularly for the latter.
New community-made maps won't appear overnight; first, everybody would have to learn how to make maps for CloD as the IL2 techniques and tools are useless for CloD. Then, to get maps to the standards of CloD will require a lot of research. For a Singapore/Malaya map for example, what buildings were characteristic for Singapore (Cricket Club!)? These would have to be made. The RN dockyard? Aerodromes- what did Kallang, Seletar, Alor Star etc really look like? PF's aerodromes are nowhere near historically accurate. Even the CloD devs missed stuff though working on London for quite some time- St. Paul's, Battersea Power Station for instance. Such a map could only be made by a team- one or two doing the basic map plus textures, others the buildings, vehicles (eg Japanese tanks) etc. CloD doesn't have IL2's range of objects yet, hence long-term.

Each to their own then i guess and i'm sure that TF will get plenty of recruits but i'll continue to champion the cause of the freelancer and should map making tools ever appear in the public domain then i'll happily pick them up and have a tinker!

Already am i member at mapworx team and is good team for sure but not am i happy to be at team because now is to much pressure and my Narvik map it must wait until i can finish it the team project, when project is finish i will leave the team and become a team with him Blumax so we can work together at new map. I would like at future i can created maps for COD but not do i want to become member Team Fusion or at any more teams. If is possible at future i can created maps for COD on my self or with him Blumax then this would be cool for sure.

Form me the introduction of Jets to Il-2 has kep my interest in the sim, being the onlly acurate sim for 50´s planes and theratwers  right now.

The developers never abandoned the sim.  The developers actually tried everything to buy the source code after they were fired.  There was a whole bunch of politics and snakes in the grass behind the entire thing and the transition to a new company to make an another sim.  I can tell you that the millions spent on Clod were not in waste.  You would not believe the some of the stuff inside the sim and just how forward thinking it is.  The only problem at release was because it wasn't finished.  And add in the fact that the expansion had a timeframe to get pushed out the door, Clod was hardly touched in the whole time it was released.  All the effort went into the sequel (which was at least in an Alpha state) before the plug was pulled.

As far as what is possible to mod or do with Cliffs of Dover - I'll say, with confidence, everything is possible.  I do understand the frustrations for flight sim fans, especially with how badly the release of the product went.  It's gotta bad name.  But I can tell you the reason I can no longer play 1946 is because just how much detail and immersion there is inside Clod.  The damage model alone, and I'm not talking about the physical aspects of it, just the systems it entails is unbelievable.  Just look at the large bits:

That doesn't even begin to get into how these systems are tied together dynamically.  You have to know where to hit a plane to bring it down in cliffs.  Your gun convergence matters.  Your types of ammo etc., are all critical to shooting down an enemy plane.  Again, all I can say is there was a reason they spent upwards to 10 million in development costs.  What they built, what's under the hood is the foundation for something at least 10 years strong.  Just the scripting ability in missions alone is mind blowing.  You can literally code/script anything you put your mind to in a mission.  There's missions on our server that have well over 5000 lines of code just in the scripting bit.  It's like building your own server commander into each individual mission.

It needs work, most definitely, but from a player point of view, there isn't a MP flight sim out there that comes close, and the SP world will get there once the AI is worked on.  It's also baby steps here.  This is just the beginning.  Maps are in progress. Planes are in progress. New theaters and objects are in progress.  This sim is growing every day.  Almost everyday our server has 100 people on it.  This is even through the weekdays.  No other modern sim comes to those numbers being possible and currently happening in a single server.

Also, to others worried about a team environment, TF doesn't deal with deadlines.  Everyone is as free to do as much or as little as they can.  The team part is simply to have a collaboration amongst people that want the same thing.  There is no stress to finish something, just as there is no timeframe to do it in.  If you want to help or think you can, we want you, but please don't feel that TF isn't made up of a bunch of people that share your same passions.  Though the team is made up of many real life professionals/developers, the work in the free time is a labor of love.  The only thing I can say, is if you've played Clod as long as me, and still continue to see new things, new details, new found scripting methods etc., that's when you realize just how special this all is.  It not only has the potential to be the next 1946.  It has the potential to far surpass it.  And that's exactly what we plan on doing.

So with that, I'll leave you a fanmade movie trailer using Team Fusion's latest patch.  If this doesn't get you excited to fly or participate, I don't know what will :D

Cheers fellas,
Bliss

I don't yet have Clod. Probably the main hurdle is the fear of needing a major hardware upgrade to get the best out of it.

Putting that issue to one side. My main interest is tinkering with ship models. Are the tools for exporting from Max all available? Can you import a stock model into Max, change it, and export it back to the game.

If I create a model can I get it into the game myself or do I have to submit it to a committee "for approval", wait for someone else to create the game files, then maybe in a few months be able to see it in the game.

For me model making is an iterative process. I need to see things in the game in order to decide whether the level of detail etc is sufficient. If I have to rely on others to do any part of this then that can create obstacles.

What are the prospects of introducing carrier ops in the future?
A fleet carrier would be a very large model if done at the same level of detail as the smaller escort ships I have seen.

Are any sample models in Max format available  -- vehicles or ships.
-- or is there a guide to the model structure.  (structure, poly limits, texture limits, etc)

Ashes, I believe you can test your own products, but you have to create a separate vanilla CloD installation without the TF mods and use something called "Kegetys" to add mods if I'm not mistaken- correct me if I'm wrong, somebody, I'm not familiar with the details.
Don't know the specs of your current rig, but my best desktop which is also my CloD rig is fairly old- MSI K9AGM2-L mobo, AMD X2 5000+ CPU, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM (the maximum), GT630 2GB vid card. It runs CloD fairly well though by no means perfectly. Currently the CPU is the bottleneck, I think, but this can only be improved by installing an X2 5200+ and I'm not sure the improvement would be worthwhile. For basic testing of a ship or a map, however, I believe something similar would be more than satisfactory.
