Northrop Flying Wings (N9M and XB-35)
« on: September 11, 2013, 11:42:01 AM »

Started work today:

Won't be able to do anything for a while after this evening (away again) but will post updates when possible. I'm building the N9M first, and as that aircraft is a 1/3rd scale model of the full bomber, the full XB-35.
I know the N9M was a research aircraft, but i'm planning on releasing a souped up version as a semi-fictional fighter as well.

The N1M is in the Smithsonian (not quite unrelated to the N9M), I'm assuming as a tribute to Jack Northrop's unending effort to prove his tailless design. An effort that came to fruition shortly before his death, when he was taken to a secret location and shown a scale model of the Northrop Grumman B-2 Spirit, the first tailless design to be accepted for service in any Air Force.

Excellent news, hope you can create a proper fighter based on that flying wing. A carrier variant is possible? No idea of the low speed flight characteristics of a flying wing.

Will love to fly the bomber too!!

Cool!  Can't wait for the semi-fictional N9M fighter!  Would be neat experiment with!

First the flying saucer... Now the N9M.... Maybe this will lead to the XF5U flying pancake! :)

Wow! Mikoyan is the super-modder! He has been making all sorts of cool stuff lately.

Mikoyan, I cannot wait for this. It will be very cool.

In fact the Northrop wings and Horten wings look very similar.... who copied who?  ;)

No pancake plans as of yet, save in the culinary department. This is the XB-35:

The fighter version may be skinned something like this:

With regards to carrier landings, don't know; but I would be interested to know in general how flying wings handle - i.e. spin recovery etc.

Flying wings are very popular in the RC crowd...  Little drag and high wing area make a fairly stable platform for video cameras... It also helps the camera crowd (FPV) because there is usually no rudder in the way for camera views as well as having the prop in the back.

Sharper angled wings would need fences to keep the air flowing over the wing instead of down along the wing.... My buddies RC Wing is actually hard to stall.... He can give it full up elevator and kill the prop and it just "mushes" to the ground.

not an RC guy myself, although i'd love to give it a go - but what exactly do you mean by 'mushes' to the ground?
can you explain in better detail, please?
