First of all, thank you all for the interest in my project. It's not really postponed, it's being worked on, and (hopefully) getting better :) Eventually you'll get something like a few maps in one. By now Italy looks quite different from Greece, and Greece looks different from Balkans, and of course from North Africa.
Here's a screen cap from the easternmost part of the map, with more European than Mediterranean landscape:

A smooth transition from one to the other type of landscape is not easy to achieve due to the limited number of textures but I'm doing my best

I'm glad to say that when you fly close to the ground, the landscape doesn't look any worse, and I hope these screens show it (they're all 1024x1024 textures):

By the way, I no longer shuffle textures in the load.ini, I retexture the map by hand, so to speak, using unlocked FMB, and it takes time but I hope it's worth it.

Now when the major re-texture work is done (I'm putting some final touches here and there), I went to change plates on some airfields. The map uses several types, and I'm going to leave most as they are, but the bright green just didn't look right anymore. I replaced them with blank plates, so the airfields blend better into the landscape. The airfields are still quite clearly defined by lighter, smoother under-texture, and it's actually easier to take off, land and taxi around because the plates now cover entire airfield area.
Hope you'll see it as improvement :)

Glad you like it  8) This map would certainly benefit from repopulating with objects but that's too much for me now. On the other hand, the map (esp. for its size) is not very demanding on the PC. Some other maps, like Anzio, have very nicely (and densely) populated Italian towns but my aging GPU/CPU goes nuts when I try a low pass :)

I like your artistic decision to treat the actual air strips to more closely resemble the condition
of the terrain they are superimposed on. In FMB a player can add the FMB objects # 8 & #10 (white fabric with staked corners)
to indicate the beginning and end of a airstrip. I learned to fly in far west Texas, and believe me, in arid terrain airstrips are some times impossible
to see even from less then 200 meters above.

So many of the maps either stock or repaints have poor looking airstrips - I assume they (the air strip templates) are difficult to repaint and manipulate
to resemble the terrain they are contiguous with, or they would have been addressed by all map makers years ago.
Thanks Mr. Lagarto for your attention to detail -  ;D

Yes, I was thinking of marking runways' ends with a T made of fabric with stakes (I've seen it on other maps), but I don't think it's really needed. I smoothed the entire airfield area, so it's possible to take off/land without keeping lined up to the actual runways. I read that at some forward airfields the areas cleared of obstacles were simply marked off by empty fuel drums. Besides, at such airstrips some effort was made on purpose to blend them into the surroundings and hide them from the enemy.
