Basic IL-2 Game Installation Part 1
« on: March 07, 2013, 09:14:06 PM »

IL-2 1946 GAME INSTALLATION

So
You have read about IL-2 1946 on the internet.
You have seen some people doing aerobatics and crazy stuff on you tube.  :D
You start to think what the  hey it looks like an interesting game.
You buy the IL-2 1946 dvd set from your local computer game supplier ( or off the internet) and bring it home.
The box is flashy black and red with an unusual Russian jet aircraft on the front of it.
After opening the box and pulling out the dvd set plastic cover you open that up and find two dvds.
One dvd is the actual game while the other dvd is a movie sample video.
I played the movie sample video first and thought holy crap you can do all this with this
W.W. 2 flight sim.  Awesome.  :D

You then place the game dvd into your dvd drive and press Auto Play.
You’ll see it configuring the game to your computer then a full greenish screen appears.
It asks you to install IL-2 1946 into C: Program Files/Ubisoft  click yes and watch the process.
As the game installs you will see its progress at the bottom of the screen.
You’ll see some cool screen shots as the game progresses with the install.
When it is nearly finished a Direct X install box will appear, finish that procedure.
You will also see an IL 2 set up box appear.
This is important use Open GL instead of Direct X
Adjust your graphics card to any of the graphics cards that suits your card in the graphics card list.

Now your ready to start the game while the dvd is still in the dvd drive.
Click the new IL-2 1946 icon on your desk top and watch the game load up.
The main screen appears.
At the bottom left of the main screen you will see a set of numbers   4.07 this is the standard stock game issue.
You can have a lot of fun and enjoyment with just the stock issue game however IL-2 1946 has been around for a loooonnnngggg time   8) and there is so much more to think about then just the stock 4.07 game

IL-2 1946 Patches

4.08 Patch

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=1908

This patch was the first ever patch for IL-2 1946.
This patch goes back quite some time ago when IL-2 was a fledgling game

4.09 Patch including skins pack

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3764

As IL-2 became very popular this patch became the most used patch.
This patch was really a base patch for IL-2 1946. It has been around for a long time.  ;D

4.10.1 Patch

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=4044
http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=3993

This patch was developed fairly recently.
This is kind of like a new version of the game. An all new IL-2 1946 Holy Crap!  8)

4.11.1 Patch

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=4212
http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=4182

With very recent leaps and bounds this is again a new patch for IL-2 1946. Jumpin Jimminy!  :P
It is the most up to date and current patch available for the game.

DECISIONS   DECISIONS

Oh My God! You don’t know which version you want to play.
It is all a matter of preference on your part.
You can work your way up the patches as an example install patch 4.08 then install patch 4.09 and the skins pack and play that for some time.
You can then move up the ladder and install the 4.10 patch and play that for some time.
You could go straight to the top of the list and install the 4.11.1 patch and just play the latest
Patch for IL-2 1946

                                                          HHHMMMMMMMMM

GAME SETTINGS

Excellent or Perfect

When you start the game and later go into your video settings you will see excellent   settings   which is usually what the game first loads up in from the first loading of the game.

Excellent   settings    is ok but it looks a tad arcadish.
Your best bet would be to try and get the perfect settings    which is usually whited out in the set up underneath excellent settings.

Perfect   settings    is much better and much more immersive when it comes to landscape and water.

If you are only interested in using 4.10.1 there is a Mega Patch which includes 4.08 to 4.10.1

http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?name=Downloads&file=details&id=4088

So
This little Sticky is just to get you going with a basic game install and get you thinking about what patch (version) you’d like to play.
You will see some links to Mission 4 Today to download the patches.
Please click on them and check things out for yourself

More layman stickies coming   ;)

For similar nostalgia reasons I recently reinstalled the v.01 Demo version.
Il-2 travelled a long road before getting to v4.07

    IL-2 Sturmovik
    IL-2 Forgotten Battles (v1.0 - v1.22)
    Aces Expansion Pack (v2.0 - v2.04)
    Pacific Fighters - (v3.0m - v4.04m)
    PE-2 Peshka - Addon (v4.05m)
Sturmoviks over Manchuria - Addon (v4.06m)
46 - addon (v4.07m) which later became the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946 package that included all of the content and kept the v4.07m designation.
    v4.08
    v4.09 First Team Daidalos Patch
    v4.10
    v4.11

This is the first post that got me going to update my IL-2 up to 4.10.1 and it keeps on getting better and better (Although I'm DYING to play Jetwars 1956 BADLY)!!! The only question I have about the OP, is I have been reading all over the forums and like here on the post I put my root IL-2 in the C:program files which some say it should NOT be put there because it messes with the "mods" and other installations, etc in Windows Vista (which I just happen to have). Just this week I tried to download UP 3.0 RC 1-4 into my Il-2 folder that's in the C:programfiles/IL-2 and it just wouldn't work. So was just wondering if this still is the way to go or am I missing something?

Oooooh là là... I still have :

-IL-2 Sturmovik demo 1,
-IL-2 Sturmovik demo 2,
-IL-2 Sturmovik 1.02ov,
-Forgotten Battles-AEP 2.04

installed on my PC... and still enjoying them !

But farang... for the new guy installing 1946 on his PC, the first thing to do is to have the no-DVD exe ! before any patch !

snachito, correct, it's much better to install your game OUTSIDE of Program Files, especially on Vista. it's to do with the extra permissions that Windows has in place for stuff in there, so it will mess with your settings, and likely any changes you make will not work properly.
much better outside of Prog Files folder, where you have more freedom to chop 'n change things as you like. ;)

Malone, so no matter what even a person has Windows XP (not Vista) they shouldn't have my IL-2 in the C:/program files? Would it be alright to move the ubisoft folder out of the program files or do I have to uninstall and re-install IL-2,make an Il-2 folder in the C:documents, then put it there?

I haven't had any problems in the program files, but I had some problems with UP and I tried to install 4.11 last night(I have it patched up to 4.10.1) and for some reason it didn't work, the game still plays 4.10.1 quite nicely, but I want to get Jetwars BADLY eventually!!
