Open them with a notepad.
Those are, if I'm not wrong, mesh files for object

Sim files are IIRC, "hier.sim" and are used for ground objects. .Mat is a materials file which contains parameters for gloss, shine, alpha etc and has the reference for the targa image used on the mesh. Material files are called in the mesh file themselves, and these in turns point to the tga's.
