Berlin WIP
« on: November 13, 2012, 04:10:35 PM »

Hello,

I'd like to announce that I'm working on a new map - Berlin. I know I currently have an unfinished Kharkov map sitting on my shelf, but I thought I could ease myself back into mapping with a new map. So Berlin will have proper Berlin tenements, proper airfields and cover a larger area - and have good frame rates over the city.

Here's the area covered.

If I might ask what scale are we looking at in miles/km?
ABCx123 mi/km?

Nice.  Is that Peenemunde up the top there?   Always wanted to build that place on a map.

Joe, would you consider expanding it sufficiently to include the Selow Heights area and a staging area for Russian a/c to the East? Thereby, one could campaign Zhukov's drive into the city.

"Cover a larger area - and have good frame rates over the city" - that's an excellent idea!

Wonderful news Joe – your Channel map is an absolute classic large map with so many new buildings with historical accuracy. Very exciting news that you are working on Berlin. You are a legend  8)

He could cut a bit of western part to mentain size - it is to the East, not West, where the most action took place around Berlin. Alied stopped at Elbe and Soviets came from the East. Of course it depends on how much is done already - if you are already pupulating and tease us right before release (XD) than don't bother about this suggestion Canon.

Super good news CanonUK! Anything coming out of your IL-2 workshop is
pure art! and this new map is absolutely a most wanted!
THANK YOU for making it!

This will be most excellent because it even incorporates "Peenemunde" Luftwaffe
secret research facility on top, near the coast,. So we can also have V-1, V-2 missiles and
all sorts of test planes there and the RAF going over with Lancasters to bomb it.
This map will defenilty have some great air bases for lots of action for all sides, axis and allies.

Hello,

To answer some questions:

making153 I'm not sure how easy it would be to use ectoflyers Berlin ruins, because of both scale and the fact that it's easier to make a new model of a building and create a damaged version than tweak a damaged model back into an undamaged version. Remember you can use the 'destruction' brush in FMB so there's no need for a separate damage version of the map

CWMV The scale is basically 1:1

Bee and Max Yep, Peenemunde is there and will have both the airfield and the research facility.

mandrill Seelow is already on the map, but if I extend too far east it draws in more cities and airfields, and I don't want to create too much extra work. Plus, map C, H, T and ed are all done now, so it's populating and airfields now. There's enough land east and north east of seelow to have a good soviet staging area.

Excellent!

The idea of the new Berlin is really dream to see as it was until 1942, together with other developments, the cathedral, the Olympiastadion, Schloss Charlottenburg, which was the imperial house was destroyed in an Allied bombing ... but that will be later ;)  8)
