Do-17Z.. F1+FS of VIII./KG76. Battle of Britain 1940.

The tremendous air battle fought between Fighter Command and the Luftwaffe on 15th September, 1940 represented the climax of the Battle of
Britain, and it has been celebrated as Battle of Britain Day ever since.
The 8/KG 76 Dornier 17Z piloted by Feldwebel Heitsch was part of a force of about 100 German bombers which approached London over North Kent shortly before noon. The formation was intercepted simultaneously by nine RAF Squadrons. The battle developed into a series of individual fights.
During one of these encounters, Heitsch's Dornier was attacked by Flight Lieutenant Dundas and Pilot Officer Tobin of No.609 Squadron. After a low-level chase, Heitsch was forced to bring his machine down in a field at Castle Farm, Shoreham, narrowly missing the high tension cables that ran over the field.
The Dornier's crew were taken prisoner by the local Home Guard. Heitsch and Feldwebel Pfeiffer, the observer, were uninjured. Feldwebel Sauter, the gunner, had been wounded in the ankle and was taken to Maidstone Hospital. Feldwebel Stephan Schmidt, the wireless operator, died of a chest wound before reaching hospital. One other casualty was a hop picker who had been shot in the leg by a bullet from one of the two low-flying Spitfires.

Flight Lieutenant Dundas went on to shoot down the German ace Major Helmut Wick on 28th November 1940.
Dundas was then immediately shot down and killed by Wick's wingman.

Pilot Officer Tobin was an American volunteer from Los Angeles. He saw service throughout the Battle of Britain, and was a core member of the first Eagle Squadron (No.71).
He died during a fighter sweep over Boulogne on 7th September 1941.

Bf-110 III./ZG26 U8+BB Flown by Günther Specht

Günther Specht (13 November 1914 – 1 January 1945) was a German Luftwaffe fighter ace during World War II.
Specht joined the heavy fighter wing (German: Zerstörergeschwader 26) (ZG 26) "Horst Wessel" in early 1939. The unit was initially equipped with Messerschmitt Bf 109s and later with the Bf 110. In 1939 he was wounded by an RAF tail gunner and blinded in one eye. He returned to active duty and was shot down six times during the war. After his recovery in 1939, he chose to return to active service but was shot down again in France and was seriously injured. These injuries kept him grounded for the next two years. In 1942 he returned to active duty with 1st Fighter Wing (Jagdgeschwader 1 Oesau; JG 1)). He was then made Group Commander (Gruppenkommandeur) of II Group of JG 11 (II./JG 11) and promoted to Major. He was appointed as Wing Commander (Geschwaderkommodore) of JG 11 and was listed as missing in action during the attack on the Allied bases at Asch and Ophoven as part of Operation Bodenplatte. He was posthumously promoted to lieutenant colonel (German: Oberstleutnant) and was recommended for the Oak Leaves (German: Eichenlaub) to the Knight's Cross, which was refused for unknown reasons.
Specht was considered as one of the best fighter leaders during the war and was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes). During his combat career he was credited with 34 enemy aircraft destroyed, all downed on the Western Front.

Captured Vickers Wellington Mk.IC (RAF serial L7842)

This captured Vickers Wellington Mk.IC (RAF serial L7842) was in service with the German Luftwaffe, probably based at the test center at Rechlin, circa 1941.
L7842 was delivered in mid-1940. It was lost on 6 February 1941 while in service with No. 311(Czech) Squadron, RAF, while on a mission to Boulogne (France). It was forced to land, and captured intact.
The crew of the bomber was composed of:

Staffelkapitän. Erbo Graf von Kageneck.
Erbo Graf von Kageneckwas born on 2 April 1918 at Bonn in Rhein. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1936. At the outbreak of World War 2, Leutnant von Kageneck was serving with 2./JG 1. He flew his first missions of war during the invasion of Poland. Von Kageneck gained his first victories over Maastricht, when he shot down two RAF Blenheim twin-engine bombers on 12 May 1940, during the first days of the Blitzkrieg through Holland, Belgium and France. On 5 July, 2./JG 1 was redesignated 8./JG 27. Von Kageneck claimed further victories during the Battle of Britain. On 18 September 1940, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 9./JG 27. Von Kageneck recorded his 10th victory when he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter over Tunbridge Wells on 29 September. By the end of 1940, he had accumulated 13 victories. With III./JG 27, von Kageneck was sent to the Mediterranean theatre and operated briefly over Malta. Here he gained four victories against defending RAF Hurricane fighters. Included in his victories over the island were two notable RAF fighter pilots. On 13 May 1941, von Kageneck shot down Flight Lieutenant Innes Westmacott (3.75 destroyed, 1 probable and 1.333 damaged victories) of 185 Sqn, RAF, who baled out wounded. He shot down Pilot Officer Claud “Hamish” Hamilton (6 victories) of 185 Sqn, RAF on 14 May. Hamilton died of his wounds a short time later.
 Von Kageneck participated in the invasion of Russia and claimed 16 aircraft shot down in July 1941. Oberleutnant von Kageneck was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 37 victories on 30 July. On 14 August, he claimed five Russian aircraft shot down in the Lake Ilmen area to record his 39th through 43rd victories.  He recorded three victories (50-52) on 29 August and, on 4 October, a further three (58-60). On 17 October, III./JG 27 were withdrawn to Germany for rest and re-equipment. Von Kageneck was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 39) on 26 October for 65 victories. With his score at 65, von Kageneck was transferred to the Mediterranean theatre with III./JG 27 in December 1941, following a two month rest and re-equipment at Döberitz. He gained his last two victories against RAF fighters over the deserts of North Africa. On 24 December 1941, von Kageneck was critically wounded in combat with RAF fighters south of Agedabia. Although he managed to return to base, he died of his wounds in a Naples hospital on 12 January 1942. Some sources indicate that his victor was the Australian ace Clive Caldwell (28.5 confirmed, 6 probable and 15 damaged victories) of 250 Squadron RAF.

Leopold "Bazi" Steinbatz (born 25 October 1918 in Vienna, Austria, killed in action 23 June 1942 near Vovchansk, Kharkiv Oblast, on the Eastern front) was a German former Luftwaffe fighter ace and sole non Officer recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords during World War II.
After service in the Austrian Army Steinbatz joined the Luftwaffe as a trainee pilot in 1939. By November 1940 Steinbatz was posted to 9 Staffel of Jagdgeschwader 52.
He often flew as wingman to future high scoring ace Hermann Graf, first seeing combat during the invasions of the Balkans and Crete.
He gained his first victory over the Soviet Union in early August 1941, by the end of November, he had claimed some 25 kills. In February 1942, Feldwebel Steinbatz was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 42 victories.
He continued to score consistently through the summer air offensives and shot down seven Soviet aircraft on 8 May.
Oberfeldwebel Steinbatz was awarded the Eichenlaub in June 1942. By mid June 1942, he had 95 claims to his credit.
However Steibatz had some fatigue problems after returning from leave in January 1942. He had dislayed a combat fever.
Hermann Graf said:
"After his return he proved to be absolutely reckless. He entered an unparalleled victory march, scoring one victory after another! As he achieved his no. 80 and was expected to be awarded the Oak Leaves, I urged him to take some leave. The combats had put a tremendous strain on his nerves. This was shown on several occasions.
I grounded him for a couple of days, but then he requested that I allow him to start flying combat sorties again".
On 15 June 1942, Steinbatz recorded his 99th victory but, during the return from a combat sortie on this day, his Bf 109-F was hit by Soviet anti-aircraft fire and he was killed after crashing into a forest near Vovchansk.
Steinbatz was posthumously promoted to the rank of Leutnant and awarded the Schwertern on 23 June 1942.
By this time "Bazi" Steinbatz had flown about 300 combat missions and shot down 99 enemy aircraft, all on the Eastern Front.

Wellington Mk-IC Skinpack[x13] 311(Czech)Squadron.RAF Honington 1940
No. 311 Squadron was formed at Honington, Suffolk, on 29th July, 1940, from Czech Air Force personnel who had formerly served in France and had escaped to this country at the time of the French collapse. Flying Wellington bombers and forming part of No. 3 Group, it first went into action on the night of 10th/11th September, 1940, and continued in the bomber role (being based at East Wretham, satellite of Honington, from mid-September onwards) until late April, 1942, when it was transferred to coastal command and Aldergrove and given a general-reconnaissance role. By then, it had operated 150 times, flown 1,021 operational sorties, and dropped more than 1,300 tons of bombs on enemy targets; these included Berlin, Bonn, Boulogne, Brest, Cologne, Flushing, Essen, Kiel, Paris and Turin. Shortly after joining Coastal Command No. 311 took part (as did certain other units of "Coastal") in the third 1,000-bomber raid, on Bremen; on this occasion its Wellingtons operated from Birchan Newton.

Defiants [x11 Skins]264 Squadron.1940
On 8 December 1939 the squadron was reformed at Martlesham Heath to bring the Boulton Paul Defiant fighter into service. Operations began in March 1940 when the squadron started convoy patrols. After initial successes the Luftwaffe soon realised that the Defiant was vulnerable to frontal attack, and the squadron started to have heavy losses of aircraft and crew. At the end of May 1940 the squadron was withdrawn from operations as a day-fighter squadron and began to train in the night-fighter role. It was called into action again in the day fighting role at the height of the Battle of Britain but again suffered losses and returned to the night-fighter role. After a number of moves around England, including Luton Airport. In May 1942 the squadron moved to RAF Colerne to operate the de Havilland Mosquito II, later trading them in for the later Mark VI.

Thickness.
