Vehicle with moving wheels experiment V2
« on: August 12, 2012, 08:39:52 AM »

.

I tried to make appear wheels moving on a vehicle, the Studebecker truck.
You can find it as a single object here: https://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php/topic,19829.msg214646.html#msg214646

The wheels I made appearing are not a part of the object, are only different .tga, modified so that the wheels have a different position.
The result is something like here in this animated gif:

Variations can be made through the .txl file
I think that this method can be applied also on tanks, changing the part of .tga where the track is painted (always preserving the original alpha channel)
I hope that our talented skinners would try this method and get best results than mine, that is only a preliminary experiment...!    :)

(The usefulness of this eye candy mod is mostly limited to the making of movies, since you'll hardly notice moving parts of vehicles while strafing them...)

installation: install the truck using entries of Epervier's thread (see above), then unzip my folder and copy the "AAA Studebecker moving" folder in your mods directory

EDIT
The studebecker truck is already included in russian columns. Installation is necessary only if you want it as a single vehicle.

Version 2
This pack includes also a static version of Studebecker. When you choose it in "Objects" in FMB menu, you have a truck with static wheels.

(if you put the entries at bottom of Static.ini, it will be the last object)

Great!
But is not this killer FPS if too many vehicles?
Bravo !

Thank you Gabriel, and very good question indeed!   I tried it in a mission with some "Rus supply column type II", where the truck is included, and I didn't notice losses of FPS, but maybe it happens if they are really too much...! :)

Very interesting!
It remains to make the tank treads and... horses and wagon wheels ...  :D

Great work, and not only for movies: I usually add static cameras in my missions to enjoy ground action.  :)

Hi, I have some question: Are wheels moving on stationary model and when car stop?

Hi, I have some question: Are wheels moving on stationary model and when car stop?

When the Studebecker stops the weels keep on moving.

@Ectoflyer, I experimented also with the .TXL file about a year ago or so. For fun I created a moving Coca~Cola commercial on top of one of the skyscrapers.

I've also been thinking to try it out on the wheels of locomotives and especially on the metal bars in between the wheels. Would be nice to see the red metal bars (don't know how it is called) moving up/down and forwards/backwards. Especially on Greif's new 3D Russian locomotives.

@Epervier, I think it won't work on horses. In that case it is more than just adding some .tga's.
It is a 3D modeling/Java thing I suppose, just like the running soldiers and pilots bailing out.

@Uufflakke
It's a very good idea for the locomotives!!! it would be very nice  :P (with some puff of steam, perfect :D)
I didn't know for the skyscraper, it's funny!...-we begin to have really a lot of stuff at SAS - (Do you have the link? Couldn't find it through the Search engine if I search "Skyscraper"...thanks)

@Maro
yes, unfortunately the wheels keep moving, but adding the same object as a static one, adding an additional .msh that use the old .tga, is solved. (see first post)
thank you for the question, so I was pushed to find the solution... ;)

The puffs of steam are no problem.    Make the wheels move and I'll kiss ya.
