Ok, waggling wings can trigger a flare. That's working.
The complicated part is still missing: integrating the landing clearance routine.
Also need to finetune the waggling freq and amplitude that's required for ATC to recognize it as a landing request.

Here's a quick update:

Aircraft arrives over airfield, banks right,

banks left,

flare is fired in repsonse

As it is right now, one needs to achieve 30deg difference in bank angle within 2 seconds, and banking directions need to be opposite.
PS: The on screen msgs are just data readouts for development purposes.

And I was beginning to think you might have been winding me up.

I say again 'Truly Amazing'.

Guys, you might want to test this:

link removed

 :)

Unzip to your #SAS, #DBW or mods (depending on your install) and add this line to your stationary.ini:
Code: [Select]
LandingFlare       vehicles.stationary.MarkerFlare3$MarkerFlare3Unit 0
How it works:
Place on an airfield. Assign to any side, doesn't matter.

When you are within 2000m of the object, flying at altitude 1000m or below, and wiggle your wings to achieve a bank angle difference of -15 deg to +15deg or larger within 2 seconds, you will either get a green flare (=cleared to land), or if the runway is blocked or there is traffic on final, a red flare to /(&(%$ off.
Now, ATC might not recognize your wiggling the first time (this is because it takes a measurement every 2secs, and your rhythm could just happen to fall halfway into this = ATC sense no wing movement), so keep doing it until you trigger a reaction. I think this shortcoming actually adds to realism, might be that the tower guy was distracted flipping though his gentlemen magazines after all... ;)
Once a flare was fired, another flare cannot be triggered until 30seconds have passed. Also, once your gears touch the ground, an even longer wait to the next possible flare is required.

This thing was only tested in once, so no guarantee it does what it's supposed to do.
Let me know about your findings please, once it works flawlessly I will repack a new one-stop-shop Relaistic Airfield Lighting mod containing all the new features.

Sputnik great work again mate,

Had a few observations about FIDO, not sure if you can maybe implement any of them?

1) Could all effects for FIDO be included with the mod package please? Tried out a few effects packages and they both give FIDO fires that are about 100ft tall!

2) FIDO was only used at night/foggy weather, and usually at request of aircrews. Or a decision was made to use it at HQ if a lot of planes having trouble landing, who would then be diverted to FIDO equipped airfields. Could it somehow be only triggered at players request? at present it comes on in broad daylight/good weather. Or could planes be diverted to FIDO airfield if weather/conditions meet some predetermined value?

3) Also any way it could be limited to the end of 1943, beginning of 1944?

Just a few thoughts mate, otherwise a brilliant addittion

regards

Ok Sputnik - really like the new LandingFlare - here's my observations:-

Set up a flight of two waypoints from one end of the runway to the other at 500m then third waypoint was a landing one.

On first flight with empty runway did a couple of wing waggles (just to be sure) and got the green flare.

Second flight with 8 x FW 200 on runway waiting to take off. Waggled the wings and then set AI on, got a green flare (acknowledgement flare I presume) and as the a/c under AI control came round to land got the 'Wave off' message and then the red flare fired, by the second time the a/c came round to land the runway was clear.

Third flight was the same conditions as the previous, got the green flare initially again but this time the FW 200s took longer(?) to take off so got the 'Wave Off' message and a red flare on two occasions before it was clear to land.

Well done - I'd love to test it more but as it's after 4am here I'm off to bed.

Cheers - Redfox

I apologize if I ask something before have the time to test this great mod but since it's still a WIP I was wondering if , speaking of airfield lights and flares , is possible add a red/green flare also for take off....

All the best!
