USS Lexington CV2 - 1942

USS Lexington CV2 - 1942
Lexington Class Aircraft Carrier

Sister ship of the USS Saratoga CV3

The stock Lexington in the game represents the general configuration of the warship up to March 1942. She underwent significant alterations to her armament in March 1942 prior to the Battle of Coral Sea.
At this time both Lexington and Saratoga had their 8in turrets removed in order to make space for a greatly increased AA armament. The turrets were installed in coastal defences on Oahu.
After the turrets were removed Saratoga went east to the US for a major refit. Lexington however could not be spared and was refitted with whatever was available at Pearl.

Lexington at the Battle of Coral Sea - by Marii Chernev

Commissioned:   14 December 1927
Sunk:                  8 May 1942 at Battle of Coral Sea

General characteristics:
Displacement:     49,000 long tons
Length:              271.00m
Beam:                32.14m
Draught:             7.39m

Speed:            34.8 knots

Armament After March 1942 Refit:

12 × single 5in guns (12x1)
13 × 28mm quad guns AA   (13x4)
28 × 7.62mm AA  (28x1)
20 × 20mm Oerlikon AA (20x1)

Aircraft carried:

May 1942  VF-2(22 F4F), VB-2(18 SBD), VT-2 (12 TBD), VS-2 (18 SBD), total 70 aircraft.
VF-Fighters, VB-Bombers, VT-Torpedoes, VS-Scouts

Service History (after refit):

Sortied from Pearl Harbour on 15th April 1942
Re-joined the USS Yorktown Task Force TF-17 on 1st May 1942.
TF-17 moves into the Coral Sea to counter Japanese expansion in response to reports of IJN fleet concentrations in the area.
7th May 1942 search planes locate elements of the IJN fleet. Lexingtons air group sinks the light carrier Shoho.
8th May 1942 IJN main fleet with the carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku located.
Air groups from Yorktown and Lexington hit Shokaku putting the flight deck out of action.
Just before mid-day Lexington is struck by two torpedoes and three bombs.
Subsequent explosions cause fires which go out of control.
At 17:07 the ship is abandoned. Ship scuttled by torpedoes from the destroyer USS Phelps DD-360.

Although it was a tactical victory for the Japanese, the battle was a strategic victory for the Americans.  In other words, Japan inflicted more damage during the battle but the Americans fared better in the long run, and for two reasons.  First, the Americans had turned back the Japanese for the first time in the war, providing a much-needed morale boost to the allies.  Second, because of Japanese aircraft losses and damage suffered here, the two Japanese heavy aircraft carriers at Coral Sea could not participate in the crucial Battle of Midway, one month later, in which Japan lost all four of its aircraft carriers.  If the two Japanese carriers at Coral Sea had been able to fight at Midway, the outcome of the Midway battle -- and the war -- might have been very different.

Compared with the later 40mm quads which Saratoga was fitted out with at Puget Sound the 28mm quads do not have the same range. Three of the hits she took were from dive bombers. Try coming in high and dropping. The AA is not so good shooting straight up.

when I set one of these up with an attack by 12 torpedo bombers, speed 61km/, they are all shot don and at best, only 3 torps will hit (which is realistic I suppose) I haven't tried dive bombing it yet but I suppose it will be similar

Downloaded, installed with ships & chiefs ini only, just to test. 70CTD. Have Eagle & Fiji installed, both work fine. Any ideas? 4.10.1, SAS ModAct 3.6. If I install the ShipAshes folder, w/o any,ini files, I still get that CTD at 70. Any help appreciated.

Wow, the revised AA setup is awesome (in the original sense of the word). Coral Sea scenarios are a little more interesting now... I just wish I had a USS Minneapolis to go with her.

What does your logfile say?
The class files for Lexington do not interact with the Eagle/Fiji/Warspite set. They are standalone.
You did copy in the two new Lexington classes?
