Currently there is a Franken jet fighter thread going on.... Maybe that guy can knock out a Thud.... It's a relatively straight-forward design.... As airplanes go...

When I first worked in the 457TH Fighter Squadron, they had just Transitioned the the F-4D's, prior to that they had Thud's, I just missed being able to work on the by a few months.

Thud and the Delta Dart (the 106) are my fav Century series planes, would be nice among the jets.

My fav jet I think, as I remember well teh Ga. ANG having 22 G model Wild Weasels (which were very successful in Nam in 72 especially) until 83 when F-4Ds replaced them. Those are the loudest afterburners I have ever heard, would rumble and vibrate the earth when they would line up on the runway At Dobbins AFB.

The Nuke weapons bay was filled with a fuel tank and the ordinance hung on the wings. I still have my Mongram 1/48th scale model in Ga. ANG markings.

There were several pilots that did well against teh Migs, including one who got 3 on one misn I think, including one after he refueled and rejoined the skyraiders he would up defending, but I can'tremember his name. His adventure got a section in the history channel series "Dogfights".

A friend of mine who flew 3 tours in Nam 65-70 (104C,105DF4D) told me that the Migs had an advantage over them mostly due to their idiotic restrictions that allowed the Migs to shoot first. Sometimes they would pull up and fly formation with them a half mile away to see where they were going. This let them get into perfect position. Sometimes our guys would break those LBJ rules though. Was a FAST AC, especially on the deck.

My older Brother worked on the Thud prior to me being hired on to the same Unit, but then, they had F-4D's, and then E's.

Don't forget the F-105G, "Wild Weasel" My dad was an EWO (Electronic Warfare Officer) He and his pilot flew 100 missions over North Vietnam. Primary objective was SAM sites. He's got a lot of cool stories.
