Damage to ships using guns

With this mod damage can be done to ships using guns only regardless if it’s 50 cals or 20mm cannons or what have you. As it is now you can’t do much damage to ships with guns at all, even with cannon rounds. With that said, I am 100% positive a mod like this is possible because I already made a mod that will allow this to be done and it’s more dependent on the ships damage model rather than the gun strength. Try this. Copy the text below into your ship.ini file and over write the existing text. Then make a mission using cargo ships, then attack with guns only.  Short of being able to simulate fuel, oil barrel, depth charges and such being hit, I have tried to make this as random as I could so that it’s hard to know just when the ship will die. This is part of a bigger mod so you won’t get the full effect, but at least you will be able to kill ships with guns now. It can be hard to do depending on the plane you're in but it can be done and it will take multiple passes. This will not work on destroyers and such, but it will work on transport ships, fishing boats and the like. In addition it was not possible to kill light cruisers with AP Rockets, but with this mod you and your wingies can kill ‘em with AP Rockets. Give this a try then let me know what you think.

Great mod, works fine. I just destoryed ship with Do-335  8)

I was wondering if yourself and boogabooga might release a joint mod?

Boogabooga's mod that made U-Boats and Transports list when they take damage from bombs falling in close proximity

I believe asheshouse (or it is western), for his vessels, is trying to make the ship armour more realistic with if possible, visual damage decals/skin-changes - maybe the naval commitee might conviene a private developement discussion before ragnorock; if they haven't yet that is.

I tried the Coral Sea map in QMB and tried strafing the Destroyers in it and didn’t seem to do any damage to them even though I could see a very large number of strikes.   I was using a B-25 with the 12 fixed 50 calibers, but the Destroyers showed no damage.

Then I made the changes to the ship.ini that Silkk gave in this post on how to adjust the Gun Durability … the difference was dramatic.  On the first burst the Destroyer started showing black smoke and after a couple of runs it looked like it was on fire amidships.   This seemed realistic to me.    However, I had unlimited ammo turned on for this experiment and kept making runs at the Destroyers (there are two of them), but even as I did this the fires and smoke slowly went away.  After that I could not seem to hurt them with gunfire again.

While I enjoyed my first success using this change it did not seem to have any lasting affect, but this could be another problem with the Ship damage model.   

Because I liked to at least see the initial effect of my gun attack I will leave these changes in my ship.ini for now.

good to hear mate, thanks for your work.

Something that has also bothered me, especially with the slower sinking times, is the fact that the ships always stop firing their guns when they have recieved critical damage.

This is a bit of an immersion killer as you are notified that the ship is 'dead' when outwardly it may appear normal.

Is there anyway to get the guns, or at least the AA guns to continue firing even as the ship is sinking?

I just took a quick look to see if I could find what you are asking for, but I couldn’t find it in the files anywhere. Finding where it's at within the files will probably be harder than making the changes you want. I'm pretty sure it could be done though.

I don't think its working for me. I copy/pasted the text into the ships.ini and saved it and went to try it. I used the a20g1 with 4x 20mm and b25 with 12x.50, even one of the b-25s with the big cannon. No sinking, no different color smoke, no list no secondary explosions, no nothing, As far as I could tell I wasn't even scratching the paint on the cargo ship with any of them. Can someone help me figure this out? I was on the Okinawa map in Dark Blue World if that is significant to whats happening. This sounds like an excellent mod if I can make it work.
