here's a good example of what a lava flow looks like from the air.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/gakout/2084514795/

It's much more orange than just straight red, with darker, cooling areas in the middle of the flow.

Excellent work so far by the way. Way back when on AAA, I had started trying to redo the Hawaii map using a slightly modified stock map with completely rebuilt object placement. I know a few others tried after I lost interest in finishing the project. I was never quite happy with some of the limitations in trying to build an accurate Hawaii with the limitations of the engine. Some better, more appropriate textures than what I had to work with will go a long way though.

Keep up the great work!

Cheers mate. Still not definitive textures, I agree needs to be different :) I want to do a good job here, the more I spend with this map texturing it the more I enjoy it, it's gonna be a nice map :)

PS feel free to post more pictures :)

Notice that he has set the Weather to Hazy or good so the Shadows drop,With clear weather and more light it will looks like your pic !

Most of textures I use are variations from others, I'm only the mixer sitting in the shoulders of giants :)

Oh if only someone would edit the shallows on the hawaii map so that my shallows textures wont show on the river banks, I can make the shallows look just like that. Sadly I dont know how. Here's hoping. :)

The chicks are so hot!! (hope my girlfriend doesn't check this forum :p) and Tom Selleck picture killed me :D

Seriously, we are going to have a texture similar to the coast in the pic 1, and I'm going to try to add black beaches, white beaches and specially the sort of 'wall' texture in pics 5, 9, 11, hopefully. Hawaii is so varied I'll fill all slots for sure, possibly reducing agriculture ones. Guaranteeing all of them blend more or less of course. And the volcanic part is key also. I tested last night in the dark and the lava sort of glows at night :)

Me neither mate :) I'd like to have good shallows on this one, textured by you, possibly not very big without covering the sea of foam though. Like in the Slot map (even if the shallows in the Slot show in the rivers if I remember well)

Well I'm going to focus on terrain for the moment while someone comes to save us on the shallows stuff :D

Before I discovered Saburo's Hawaii map, I was looking into doing the chain of islands myself.

During some of my research I discovered something interesting: most all the islands have nice vegetation, and geographic formations abundant- the exception seems to be the little island of Kaho’olawe. Saburo did okay I thought in texturing this island, it shows more as barren although the texture looks a tad too brown to me. Kaho’olawe was turned into a weapons range after Pearl Harbor and is a nice distance from the other islands so as to add some geographic realism.

Here were some of my resources when it came to Kaho’olawe island, which was one of my main motivations for even trying to make a map.

Kaho’olawe, Hawaii

Operation Sailor Hat (interesting testing done on the island- some cool pix)

Some images

Hope that might help-- looking forward to the result!

Good luck

Thanks for the resources Triad, will be useful! Do you happen to know how many islands have active volcanoes right now (or then)? Hawaii island for sure but what about the rest? Cheers

Hi Whitecat- found this under tourism http://www.hawaiilogue.com/active-volcanoes-in-hawaii.html

Not sure if they were like that in the 1940's tho.

Hey it might be nice to add a smoke objects into the map were the active volcanoes are :)

The lava flows look really interesting!

Cheers
