How to copypaste an alpha layer in GIMP? (SOLVED!)
« on: October 16, 2010, 06:27:33 AM »

I want to edit some cockpit .tga's and instead of adding a new alpha layer it would be much easier and quicker to add the original alpha layer to it.
I fiddled around a bit in GIMP, tried all kind of options and searched the online manual but that's wasn't helpful to me at all.
Unfortunately my own editing program doesn't have an alpha channel/ 32-bit option.

Any help will be appreciated!  :)

I don't have GIMP but the way I do it in Photoshop:

--> make a selection of the alpha layer of the 'source' tga
--> control-c (copy into clipboard)
--> open the 'destination' tga where I want the alpha layer into
--> select the destination tga's empty alpha channel
--> hit control-v (or paste) and the source alpha channel has been copied

Hope this helps.

GIMP has that kind of option too and I've tried that out already today but without succes. I think I overlook something...
Hopefully an experienced GIMP user can help me out.
GIMP is the only alternative for me to create alpha layers unfortunately. I will never get used to GIMP anyway.  >:(

Maybe try Paint.NET 3.5.5 (it can make layers too) but i didnt work in it,

or PhotoPhiltre9.xx or greater (currently is 10.x.x the latest)- Photophiltre is very friendly to use iam working in it for 3+ years and done with it dozens of textures, retexturations or comlete new ones.
I am still using a version from mid-2009 which is enough powerful
for texturing.

In PhotoPhiltre u just click on the layer you want to copy, then a small menu appears and in it choose "Duplicate", a new layer- copy of previous will be created and you just drag it with mouse to place where you want to have it and put it where you want - or further you can edit that copied (new) layer.

Yes and PF (PhotoPhiltre) can have variety of colors in layers 32-bit (True), 24-bit and variety of 8-bit color options.

But u will need some "Torrent searching" for 'fixed' version because Photophiltre is normally licensed

Layer -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask -> Transfer layer's alpha channel
Hit the "alt" key while clicking with the left mouse's button in the new layer that appears in the right.
The new layer will be surrounded by a green line.
So you can copy it and paste it, but before paste it, you need to do the same in the destination texture:
Layer -> Mask -> Add Layer Mask -> Transfer layer's alpha channel
Hit the "alt" key while clicking with the left mouse's button in the new layer that appears in the right.
Then paste the alpha there and right click on the layer and "Anchor layer"
Right click again and "Apply Layer Mask".

Thanks for the advice von_Kasbegi, but I don't wanna try out every editing program that's on the market. Then things are getting too complicated for me I think.
It needs to be done in GIMP or in Photo Impact (my current program) or otherwise bad luck for me then and I will leave aside what I had in mind...

I followed your instructions step by step but at the end "Apply Layer Mask"  stays blank. So it won't let me do that.

Another thingie: It is not necessary in my case to hit the "Alt" key while clicking the left mouse button. After I select "Transfer layer's alpha channel"
and press "OK"  the green lines appears already.

This GIMP is driving me nuts...

Oh, sorry friend. :-[
It's my fault. :)

Before "Apply Layer Mask", right click on the layer and "Anchor layer".

Try it and let me know.
I'm editing my last post...

 ;D  ;D

Não faz mal rapaz!  ;)
I found out myself that I had to use  "Anchor Layer". And I forgot about some other steps before I could apply your instructions. But that's too boring to explain.
At least your instruction got me on the right track.
Now I have to write down every step I made otherwise I will forget the whole thing tomorrow.

Muito obrigado pela sua instruções Santobr!

It would be very kind of you to write here your step by step algorithm.
